History of the Flying Car: From Da Vinci's 'Aerial Screw' to the 'Blackfly'

In 2011, a Canadian inventor named Marcus Lang created a flying car called 'Blackfly'. During the test, he also put his friends in the car and made them go for a ride. He blew up the car for about 20 seconds during the test. Leng's car was the first manned flying car.

History of the Flying Car: From Da Vinci's 'Aerial Screw' to the 'Blackfly'

What you should know

The ongoing 'Nada Auto Show' exhibition in Kathmandu is crowded. Former Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal has also reached this exhibition which was inaugurated by Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli on Tuesday. The crowd of common people is also the same in the exhibition where the Prime Minister and the former Prime Minister are also going. There is an attractive item to make the crowd thick, that is - 'Flying Car' means flying car.

Electric Vertical Takeoff and Landing (Evitol) that can accommodate two people is the announced on Tuesday. This is the EH 216-S model. Carrying a load of about 600 kg, the vehicle can fly at a maximum speed of 135 km per hour. Once fully charged, it can fly up to 30 km distance or 25 minutes  can It includes state-of-the-art security systems. An unmanned aircraft has eight motors, even if six of them are not working, it can fly. Its maximum take-off weight (MTOW) is up to 600 kg. It has the ability to fly at a height of about 3 km and cover a distance of 30 km.

According to the inventors, the transparent cabin with a light and strong carbon-fiber composite structure and modern design allows passengers to experience a panoramic view of the sky.

This is the history of the flying car. Therefore, it was conceived by the painter

Leonardo da Vinci

. He envisioned flying and moving vehicles in his paintings. From where the flying car was derived . In the 15th century, Da Vinci drew a picture of the 'aerial screw'. It later became the basis of his painting Flying Car . Based on this picture, stories about flying cars started to be written about the 19th century. author Jules Verne's

'Clipper of the Clouds and Master of the World'

A flying car is envisioned in a science fiction novel. Which is named 'Albatross'. Where it is written that passengers were flown from one continent to another. From pictures to literature, the flying car envisioned slowly began to be built. In 1917, Glenn Curtiss designed his 'Aluminum Autoplane'

. It had three wings that spanned up to 40 feet (12.2  meters). This car never flew but it pushed the development of flying cars to the next level . In 1917, Waldo Waterman built a hybrid Studebaker airplane named 'Arrovel'. Like the autoplane, it also had a propeller attached to the rear of the vehicle. Its was three wheels

. Then in 1946, Robert Fulton Jr. developed the 'Airphibian' . It was the first flying car certified by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and the Civil Aeronautics Administration. It has 150 horsepower,  The six cylinder engine was . It could launch 120 mines per hour and travel at a speed of 50 miles per hour . However, despite the success, Fulton was unable to develop the Airfibian as much due to financial constraints. Later in the 1940s, Consolidated Multi Aircraft invented a two-door 'conveyor car'

with a detachable airplane unit . It started flying in 1946 . It initially had a one hour flight . After the accident during the third flight, this car could not come to the market . The first flying car designed for military use was the 'Avrocar'

. Which was created by Canadian designer John Frost in the 1950s. Since it can take off and land from any place at any time, the US government thought of using it as a fighter bomber. Invested in 1957 for further development. But Avrocar did not accept that . Inspired by Robert Fultin, Moulton Taylor aka 'Malte' built the aviator. Which was named 'Aerocar'

. The Aerocar was allowed to operate and fly without any hindrance. Similarly, the FAA also approved it . Later in the 1970s, Ford Motor Company considered marketing it, but the plan fell through due to the oil crisis. In 2011, a Canadian inventor named Marcus Leng created a flying car called the 'Blackfly'

. During its testing, he also kept his friends in the car and made them go for a ride. He flew for about 20 seconds during the test. His work caught the attention of former Google CEO Larry Page. According to Marcus Lang in The New Yorker, this is the first manned flying car . According to The New Yorker , Lang had always envisioned an airplane that would not require a pilot's license. In an interview with The New Yorker, he said - 'I wanted to make a plane that didn't require a pilot's license to fly and could fly and land anywhere.'

According to the industry business analysis site Thomson

, the flying car that started as a picture, these days more than 400 startups and companies are working to build functional flying vehicles for the advanced air mobility industry.
