France captain Kylian Mbappe has admitted that his team made tactical and technical mistakes, saying that they will always complain about their failure to reach the World Cup final.
France crashed out of the tournament after losing 2-0 to Spain in the semi-finals. Mbappe was the most impressive player in the last four, scoring eight goals in the process. But the 27-year-old Mbappe's dream of playing in a third consecutive final did not come true.
In an interview with French broadcaster M-Six, Mbappe said that he was extremely disappointed. "We did not play as we wanted. We made mistakes in the tactical and technical game. Our performance as a team was not high. If we did not play as we wanted in the semi-finals of the World Cup, we would lose."
"Our goal was to play fast and attack and slow Spain down. We were better than Spain in terms of controlling the game. But we couldn't do that,' Mbappe added, 'Our dream was to reach the final, it didn't come true, we have to accept it.' Mbappe admitted the defeat against Spain
was due to his team's poor performance in midfield.
Spain's Rodri, along with Dani Olmo and Fabian Ruiz, dominated the field, while Adrien Rabat and Arlene Chomeny were limited to themselves for France. Mbappe's analysis was, 'Our two friends couldn't do anything against Spain's three midfielders. That seems to be our main problem. The way we were defeated can't be anything other than disappointing.'
France's problem wasn't just in midfield, it was also in attack. Ousmane Dembele also seemed quiet throughout the game. Desire Dou and Bradley Barcola, who came on in his place, also failed to perform as expected. This left France's attack with no edge. Mbappe himself was unable to perform as magically as he had in previous games.
So the French fans cheered loudly when the big screen in the stadium showed David Beckham and Victoria. The French defense also made two mistakes and Spain scored both times. First, Mikel Oyarzabal scored from the penalty spot and then Pedro Porro added a second.
When the final whistle blew, Mbappe was alone on the field. Some of his teammates were kneeling on the field. Others covered their faces and did not want to show their inner reactions. The French team, which had played at a high level until the semi-finals, suddenly became no more than an ordinary team in the semi-finals, even emotionally.
