French captain Kylian Mbappé believes that just because his team has reached the semifinals of this World Cup, there is no need to get carried away with emotion; the team still has a long way to go.
France reached the final four on Thursday after defeating Morocco 2–0 in the quarterfinals of the tournament. After the match, captain Mbappé said, “The only answer to criticism is victory.”
In an interview with the French media, he said, “Everyone says we are a team aiming to win the World Cup. Hearing that makes me happy. We have now reached the semifinals, so we are happy as well. But we still have a long way to go. The road ahead will be even more difficult, but we are ready to face that challenge.”
Mbappé missed a penalty early in the match against Morocco, but later succeeded in opening the scoring in the second half. Afterwards, Ousmane Dembélé added a second goal from his pass. Towards the end of the match, he was substituted because he had a minor injury to his leg. He says, “Whatever challenges are thrown at our team now, we must neutralize them. We also have to see which team will be our next opponent.” He added, “There’s no need to worry much about my injury, I’m fine.”
Coach Didier Deschamps also considers Mbappé’s performance decisive in France’s victory. With his goal against Morocco, his total in this tournament has reached 8. Deschamps says, “When you have players like Mbappé in the team, the coach doesn’t need to worry.”
When France won the World Cup in 2018, he was an emerging player. Four years later, France finished only as runners-up. But he scored 8 goals, including a hat-trick in the final against Argentina. Regarding France’s performance, coach Deschamps said, “Reaching the final for the third consecutive time is a great achievement.”
He further added, “But right now, we haven’t won anything yet. Our team is good in itself, otherwise we wouldn’t have reached the semifinals. For now, the fact is we have only reached the final semifinal. The next match will certainly be tougher than the previous ones. In this match, we have taken one step toward the title, and now our goal must be to reach the title clash.”
