The ten-man United States defeated Bosnia and Herzegovina 2-0 on Thursday to advance to the last 16 of the 2026 World Cup. The three co-hosts remained in contention for the World Cup. Canada and Mexico had also won their previous last-32 matches.
Folarin Balogun gave the US the lead in the 45th minute at the San Francisco Bay Area Stadium. But Balogun did not last the entire game and was forced to leave the field in the 64th minute with a red card. The US striker was shown a red card for a foul on Bosnia's Tarek Muharemovic.
Malik Tillman doubled the US lead in the 82nd minute with a free kick. His shot from just outside the penalty area was converted into a beautiful goal. It's the first time in four years that the US has won in the knockout stages of the World Cup.
The US will now face Belgium for a place in the quarterfinals.
