Paraguay defeated Germany in a sudden death penalty shootout on Tuesday to advance to the last 16 of the 2026 World Cup. Paraguay won 4-3 on penalties. After Jonathan Tah missed his sixth penalty, Jose Cana scored the decisive goal for Paraguay.
Goalkeeper Orlando Gil was the hero in Paraguay's victory, stopping two German shots. German goalkeeper Manuel Noya also made two saves, but it was not enough. With this, the challenge of four-time champions Germany in the tournament ended.
The match went to a tiebreaker after the regular and extra time ended in a 1-1 draw. Paraguay took the lead in the 42nd minute through Julio Enciso's goal at Boston Stadium. But it did not last long and Kai Havertz equalized for Germany in the 54th minute.
Tah scored for Germany in extra time but it was not recognized.
