South Africa qualified for the knockout stages of the World Cup for the first time in their history on Thursday. South Africa defeated South Korea 1-0 in a Group A match at the Estadio Monterrey.

The only decisive goal of the match was scored by Maseko in the 63rd minute. The victory left South Africa second in the group with four points. Mexico, on the other hand, topped the group with nine points after winning its third consecutive match.

Co-hosts Mexico had already qualified. They beat the Czech Republic 3-0 in the other match at the Mexico City Stadium. Mateo Chavez opened the scoring for Mexico in the 55th minute. Julian Quinones then added a second goal in the 61st minute.

Alvaro Fidalgo scored the third goal in the fourth minute of injury time. The defeat ended the Czech Republic's challenge in the competition. The Czech team was limited to one point. South Korea is in third place with three points and its chances of reaching the next round are also weak.

A point against South Africa would have been enough for South Korea to reach the last 32. But the Asian football powerhouse could not even get a draw and its performance was disappointing.
