Eight leaders have announced their candidacies for the post of General Secretary under the first general convention of the National Independent Party (NISP).

Foreign Minister Shishir Khanal, outgoing General Secretary Kabindra Burlakoti, outgoing Joint General Secretary Bipin Acharya, leaders Ganesh Parajuli and Manish Jha have announced that they will contest for the post of General Secretary. Similarly, then General Secretary of the Bibeksheel Sajha Party Ranju Darshana, and NISP leaders Sagar Dhakal and Ganesh Karki have also said that they will contest for the post of General Secretary.

They have submitted their claims for the post of General Secretary after the results of the central member election were made public and the winning candidates were announced. According to the NISP election schedule, voting is being held from midnight on Thursday to select office bearers.

However, an NISP leader said that efforts are underway to select office bearers unanimously before the vote. If the efforts to reach a consensus are not successful, other office bearers, including the General Secretary, will be selected through the election process.

Earlier, the general convention has elected Ravi Lamichhane as the party president. Lamichhane was unanimously elected as the president after being the sole candidate.

According to the RSVP statute, there is a provision for elections for the president, two vice-presidents, one general secretary, and three joint general secretaries. There is a provision for selecting office bearers from among the 99-member central committee elected by the general convention. The election of office bearers is being watched with interest as the general convention, which is being held for the first time since the party's establishment, will elect the leadership of the RSVP for the next five years.
