Chairman KP Sharma Oli has responded to the demands for leadership reorganization within the UML. He has also warned that action will be taken against those who act against the party leadership and official decisions.
Oli appeared aggressively after Vice President Bishnu Poudel demanded internal unity by respecting different opinions within the UML during a two-day workshop that began on Sunday. At the workshop, which was attended by central members, provincial presidents and secretaries, district committee presidents and secretaries, and heads of the organization department, Oli warned that action will be taken against leaders who seek his replacement. He said that since he was elected as the president by the general convention in 2002, he would not leave the leadership midway.
Oli, who addressed a public program after the Gen-G movement in Bhadau, also warned leaders including vice presidents Bishnu Poudel, Gokarna Bista, Prithvisubba Gurung, Deputy General Secretary Yogesh Bhattarai, who seek his replacement.
‘I was elected as the chairman last December . If it is easy, I will not become the Prime Minister, if it is difficult, I will not throw my bag and run . I was elected as the chairman to lead the struggle no matter what the situation may be . There may be suspicions- that I will not be afraid that I will throw my bag in the middle and walk away . If I have to take a break after leading the party to success, I will take it in a legal way,’ he said, ‘It has been a long time since I realized that I was going to die . That is why I am healthy now . I have taken this movement very seriously . The determination to take the party and the country forward by facing challenges from this situation remains the same .’
He commented that the signing of the leadership transfer and the revival campaign within the UML have confused the party . ‘If the party’s head is cut off, the party will run Some people in the party have come to think,' he said, 'To review the challenges or to be confused?'
Immediately after Vice-Chairman Bishnu Poudel spoke, he warned that violating the statute would not be tolerated. 'UML will rise again.' He said, 'We will push those who are pushing us now.' If we violate the statute, we will take action according to the statute.' He said, 'In such a situation, we cannot tolerate anything.'
Oli argued that the organization should be strengthened by uniting in policies, analysis, and ideas, not by changing the leadership. 'Running to sign, running to spread confusion, leaving the party's statutes?', he was angry, 'Such activities spread confusion.'
At the workshop, Vice-Chairman Poudel had said that UML should have internal unity with different ideas. Referring to Oli, he argued that unity as a 'party with military tendencies' could not be achieved.
‘There should be unity in diversity. Unity in uniformity is not unity. We should move forward guided by this,’ he said, ‘It is also philosophically wrong to seek unity in uniformity. The plurality of nature should be in our party. We can reach a common conclusion by discussing the different views of individuals. We have been trying to achieve unity in diversity.’
He said that superiority should be achieved through competition. ‘Not as a political party, but as a political party. Not as a military party, but as a political party. It should be a party approved by the people. We are trying to make a party that achieves superiority in competition.’
Oli, whose central committee in Shrawan kept former President Vidya Bhandari’s membership ‘pending’, indicated on Sunday that he would make Bhandari active in the party. ‘Some friends are still raising the issue of former President Vidya Bhandari’s membership. "I just applied the other day, the committee gave me membership," he said, "I didn't become a member when I was president. I have been a party member since 2037. Don't be confused about this."
