MP Pooja, who is expected to make parliamentary monitoring more effective after being given the responsibility of taking charge of the prestigious committee that monitors the rules, laws and public policies formulated by the government, is being watched with special interest in political circles.
Pooja, 47, a resident of Gujra Municipality-8, Simrabhawanpur, Rautahat, is affiliated with the Janata Samajwadi Party (JSP) Nepal, which is active in Madhesh-centric politics. She is the daughter of Govinda Chaudhary, an old and influential leader of Madhesh. Govinda contested the election from the Nepali Congress in 2048 BS and became an MP. Later, he left the Congress and joined the Madhesh party. Following in her father's political footsteps, Pooja has been active in the social and political fields of late. In the National Assembly elections held in 2080 Magh, Pooja, who was a candidate from the women's cluster of Madhesh Province, was elected, defeating Usha Chaudhary of UML.
Due to her active participation in parliamentary practice in a short period of time, the party has nominated her to lead an important committee. She was elected unopposed after being the only candidate for the post of chairperson of the committee. The JSP included her in the National Assembly, appreciating her experience in the social sector, representation of women and the Chaudhary community. Pooja, who made her way to parliament from a background in social service, made her identity not only as a politician but also as a dedicated social activist.
The Public Policy and Delegated Legislation Committee is considered a very technical and powerful committee in the parliamentary system. The main responsibility of this committee is to see whether the regulations, directives and procedures made by the government under the acts made by the parliament are in accordance with the constitution and the main law. Women's access to the leadership of important parliamentary bodies of the state has been established.
‘My main priority will be to make the government accountable and to enforce the law strictly within the parliamentary dignity and jurisdiction of the committee,’ she said, ‘My presence in Parliament will not be just for numbers, but for the voice of the people of Madhesh and the development of Gujranwala. I will discharge my responsibility with utmost sincerity.’
She completed her MBA from Hyderabad Central University, India in 2067 BS. Before entering politics, she worked as a manager at National Health Care in Kathmandu for three years in 2068 BS. After leaving there, she worked under the supervision of Chandrapur Hospital in Chandrapur Municipality-4. The hospital was run by her husband, Dr. Subhash Chaudhary. Along with supervising the hospital, Pooja, who was interested in politics, contested the 2079 BS Provincial Assembly election from Rautahat Constituency No. 3 (1). But she was defeated by independent candidate Keshav Chaudhary. Pooja, who had a strong desire to do something for the society, had been taking the lead in social work when the people of the village needed it. As time passed, JSP Nepal took her to the National Assembly. Now she has shown her strong presence in national politics as a promising female leader.
She gained attention by speaking about education in Rautahat, the problems faced by farmers during farming, and the Indian dam in the National Assembly meeting. She has been actively involved in drawing the attention of the federal government to improve the development, education, and health conditions of Rautahat and Gujra Municipality areas. Being a permanent resident of Gujra Municipality, she has a deep influence at the local level. Her tenure in the committee, which has the main responsibility of holding the government accountable to the parliament and examining the legality of by-laws and directives made by the Council of Ministers, is believed to further elevate parliamentary supremacy, said her father Govinda Chaudhary.
There are 16 parliamentary committees under the Federal Parliament. There are four parliamentary committees under the National Assembly. Of these, two have female and two have male chairpersons.
