UML has demanded the release of Chairman KP Sharma Oli and Congress leader Ramesh Lekhak, saying they were arrested on the basis of 'illegal and political revenge'.
The secretariat meeting held to decide on the arrest of Oli and Lekhak has decided to protest the incident politically and legally, informed General Secretary Shankar Pokharel.
'Condemnation, hatred and strong opposition have been expressed against the vindictive, biased and illegal arrest of party Chairman and former Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli and Nepali Congress leader and former Home Minister Ramesh Lekhak before sunrise this morning. The arrest is against the essence of democratic values and the rule of law, and they are demanded to be released immediately,' he said.
UML has reiterated its disagreement with the commission formed by the then government under the chairmanship of Gauri Bahadur Karki to investigate the incidents of Bhadra 23 and 24, 2082. ‘In the context of serious questions raised by the Honorable Supreme Court, the party is of the opinion that the report of the commission is biased, vindictive and contrary to judicial principles,’ the UML decision states. ‘Therefore, the meeting has demanded the formation of a high-level investigation commission under the chairmanship of a sitting judge of the Supreme Court for a fair and judicial investigation.’
UML has decided to ‘oppose the planned and illegal arrest of Chairman Oli and Congress leader Lekhak and take joint and effective initiatives with political parties, civil society and the general public for their release, rule of law, democracy and protection of human rights.’
‘The arrest this morning has worried political forces in favor of the constitution, democracy and human rights and the general public. Our party will firmly oppose this vindictive action legally and politically,' Pokharel said, 'We call on the entire party ranks to move forward with unity and determination in favor of the country, people and democracy without being distracted by this incident.'
The UML has decided to submit a protest letter to the Government of Nepal through the District Administration Office against Oli's arrest on Chaitra 15, organized by the party district committees. General Secretary Pokharel said that they will discuss with legal experts and move forward for legal resistance.
'We naturally go into the process of legal resistance with the conclusion that this arrest is vindictive, biased and illegal.' "We are consulting legally for that," he said. "We are communicating with pro-democracy forces, civil society, and leaders, and we will also take forward the work of collective protest."
