Pressure on the Commission to postpone the date of candidacy registration, Deuba group reaches the Supreme Court with a writ petition

Pressure has increased on the Election Commission to extend the deadline for direct nomination registration in the upcoming House of Representatives elections scheduled for Falgun 21.

An Election Commission official said that there was pressure to postpone the nominations scheduled for Magh 6 due to lack of time and the Nepali Congress being in a dispute.

After filing a writ in the Supreme Court on Sunday and receiving the first hearing on Tuesday itself, Sher Bahadur Deuba's side has also reached the commission. The Deuba group led by Min Bahadur Bishwakarma has reached the Election Commission with a copy of the writ filed by Deuba in the Supreme Court. They have met the Chief Commissioner and urged him to postpone the nomination date.

The Election Commission has granted official recognition to the Gagan Thapa-led Congress and since they are not satisfied with it, the Deuba faction has requested that arrangements be made to hold the nominations only after the first hearing in the court.

According to the commission, parties including the Congress, UML and others have requested that the nomination registration period be postponed from Magh 15 to mid-May.  However, the commission has not yet decided on the postponement, said Acting Chief Election Commissioner Ram Prasad Bhandari.  ‘Leaders of some parties have also come here.  The commission has not taken any decision yet,’ Bhandari said.
