Even though most of the candidates for the upcoming elections within the UML have been finalized, the secretariat is yet to make a decision on some constituencies.

After Chairman KP Sharma Oli said that he would make the final decision, Gokul Prasad Baskota, elected from Kavre Constituency No. 2, is in confusion about whether he will get a ticket in the 2079 House of Representatives election.

Chairman Oli has 'held' the ticket of Baskota, who was elected to the House of Representatives from Kavre-2 twice in a row. Baskota said that he was not aware of why the ticket for Kavre-2 was withheld. Speaking to Kantipur, he said, 'We will not decide, the leadership will decide. Why this was done, I do not know.'

In Kavre's own Constituency No. 1, the UML has already fielded Amit Lama as its candidate. In Constituency No. 2, the names of leaders close to Chairman Oli are also in the news. Baskota, who was once considered a confidant of Oli, has contested elections three times from that constituency. Although he was defeated in BS 2070, he won with a large majority in 2074 and was appointed Minister of Communications and Information Technology in 2075. Baskota resigned from his post after being implicated in a bribery case related to the purchase of a security printing press while he was a minister.

He resigned, taking moral responsibility, due to the controversy that arose after the audio allegedly demanding Rs 700 million was made public. However, in the 2079 election, he won again from the same constituency.

It is said that the Oli-Baskota relationship has cooled in the last two years. Baskota, who had different views within the party, was defeated by running for the post of secretary from the Ishwor Pokharel panel at the UML general convention held last November. Accusations have also started to arise within the party that Chairman Oli is currently holding the ticket of the leaders of the Ishwor panel. Regarding this, Baskota said, "The leadership should understand the development work we have done. Yesterday, they were the ones in the Democratic Party who had different views, and we have also done the same. Ask those in power questions about the ticket."
