Nepali Congress Acting President Purna Bahadur Khadka has called a meeting of top leaders of the establishment wing to discuss the latest developments in the party.

A central member said that the establishment party, which is under pressure after Congress general secretaries Gagan Thapa and Bishwaprakash Sharma decided to call a special general convention, has called a meeting to discuss possible options for reaching an agreement.

The meeting is scheduled to be held at 1 pm. President Sher Bahadur Deuba also discussed with some leaders close to him this morning. Deuba's emphasis is that the special general convention should be stopped by some alternative. But he has not put forward any proposal on what that alternative would be.

Earlier, the schedule for the pre-election general convention was announced at Deuba's insistence. But since the work of active membership to hold the general convention according to that schedule has not been completed, the establishment party has been taking the stance that the general convention should be held after the election.

The meeting of the Central Executive Committee is also being held at 3 pm to discuss issues including amending the agenda of the general convention.

General Secretaries Thapa and Sharma have announced the postponement of the previously set schedule through a joint statement with details. The schedule of holding the central general convention from December 26 to 28, starting with the ward convention on December 16, was fixed in the meeting on December 15.

After the ward convention was not held as per the set schedule, the general secretaries have called for a special general convention for December 27-29, saying that the regular general convention schedule has been affected.
