The opposition faction of the Ishwor Pokharel leadership has concluded that the responsibility of maintaining internal unity in the UML has fallen to the 'court' of Chairman KP Sharma Oli. The opposition faction meeting held on Saturday also decided to oppose any partisanship, factionalism, division and discrimination based on the competition for leadership within the party.

At the gathering, the Pokharel faction has decided to continue raising its voice to establish methods, procedures and values within the party even if the expected results are not achieved in the competition. The Ishwor Pokharel faction has also decided to continue raising the issue of party reorganization, leadership transfer, and internal democratization.

Chairman Oli has expressed that the party will become stronger after the general convention. ‘Many expected the UML to split, they were burning incense to make it split.’ But their incense will be wasted now, I am saying this as the newly elected chairman,’ he had said immediately after taking the oath of office as chairman on Thursday, ‘UML will become even stronger. UML moved forward with this democratic practice.’

But the Pokharel faction, which competed against the establishment, has not been reassured by Oli’s statement. The office bearers and leaders of other parties who won the central committee have expressed doubts about getting proper responsibilities without prejudice. The other side says that the distribution of responsibilities among the leaders at the central committee meeting to be held on 27-29 Pus will be the beginning of 'internal unity of the party'. They believe that Oli should make a commitment to strengthen internal unity by respecting different opinions. The other side has also stated that it is committed to making the party dynamic by accepting the election results.

In the recent competition for 19 office bearers and 301 central committee members of UML, the establishment side has a clear majority. Out of the 19 office bearers, only Gokarna Bista and Yogesh Bhattarai have won as vice-chairman and deputy general secretary from Pokharel's side. A dozen central members have been elected to the central committee from Pokharel's panel. Pokharel, who competed for the chairmanship, his vice-chairman rival Binda Pandey, and his secretary rivals Karna Thapa, Gokul Baskota, and Rachana Khadka have been elected as central members.

Leader Pokharel said that checks and balances should be strengthened in the party. ‘The arrangements for checks and balances that are in place, the arrangements made by the People’s Multi-Party Democracy (JBJ), should be strengthened,’ he said, ‘We will discuss and debate this issue in the party as needed.’ In an interview with the Kathmandu Post, Vice President Gokarna Bista said that emotional unity is necessary after the competition for leadership selection. He said that there is a need for unity based on justice and law.

Bista said that Chairman Oli’s role will be important in preventing the competition for leadership from creating a rift in the party. ‘There is a suspicion that this competition will create a rift. We will have to focus on a method, justice, propriety and collectivity to prevent that from happening,’ he added, ‘We will make efforts in this.’ The chairman's additional role is necessary as the party chief.'

Rajan Bhattarai, who was elected secretary from the establishment side, said that both the winner and the loser will work with responsibility. 'It does not mean that the winner will take all the responsibility and the loser will not get any responsibility,' he said, 'Central Committee leaders will get responsibility based on their qualifications and capabilities.' He said that even if the leaders who competed in the past, Madhav Kumar Nepal and Bhim Rawal, left the party, such a situation will not arise now. Despite being defeated for the post of secretary, Rachana Khadka, who was elected as a central member, said that party unity will be strengthened only if the competition is taken naturally and responsibilities based on qualifications and capabilities are given. 'Whatever responsibility the party gives, we will work with 100 percent strength,' she said.
