With the issue of leadership transfer in the old political parties arising after the Gen-G movement, the Congress and the UML are busy preparing for their general convention.

The NCP, which was formed by the merger of the then Maoists and Unified Socialists, has been confused about the date of the general convention. Other small political parties have also not decided on the general convention.

After a one-and-a-half-month-long tug-of-war over whether to hold the general convention election before or after the general convention, the Congress has decided to hold its 15th general convention on December 26-28. Since Sher Bahadur Deuba has completed two terms as president, there will be a competition for leadership among new candidates in the Congress. The Congress statute has made a provision that no one should be in the leadership for more than two terms. The 14th general convention of the Congress was held in Mangsir, 2078 BS.

The UML, which held its statutory convention in the third week of last Bhadra, was scheduled to select its leadership next year. But after the Gen-G movement, the UML has decided to hold an 'early' general convention. The 10th General Convention of UML was held in Chitwan in Mangsir 2078. The 11th General Convention is scheduled to be held on 27-29 Mangsir. The party has already selected the General Convention representatives this week.

UML Chairman KP Sharma Oli is trying to come to the leadership for a third term from this General Convention. The Legislative General Convention had paved the way for Oli to become the Chairman for the third time. The General Convention has removed the provisions of two terms and the age limit of 70 years from the Statute. Senior Vice President Ishwor Pokharel is preparing to compete with him.

The NCP, which is coordinated by Pushpa Kamal Dahal, has not finalized the date of the General Convention. When the Maoists, Unified Socialists and other small components announced unity on 19 Kartik, it was agreed to hold the General Convention within 6 months. It was also announced in the unity program to hold the General Convention in the last week of Mangsir.

Before the unification, the Maoists dissolved the central committee and formed a general convention organizing committee under Dahal's coordination. After the party unification, Dahal is the coordinator and the then Unified Socialist Party president Madhav Kumar Nepal is the co-coordinator. Coordinator Dahal has been in the party leadership for 37 years. While in the Maoists, the then Deputy General Secretary Janardan Sharma had demanded a handover of leadership. Expressing disagreement with the party unification, Sharma and other leaders have announced the Progressive Democratic Party. The Maoists held their general convention in Poush, 2078.

NCP spokesperson Agni Sapkota said that there would not be enough time for the general convention because the House of Representatives elections are on Falgun. 'The party's unified general convention organizing committee has been formed.' Since the party has to focus on the elections, it is not possible to hold a general convention before that,' he said, 'The date of the general convention will be fixed after the elections.'

The RPP, which was formed in Ashar 2079 before the last general election, has not held a general convention yet. The extended meeting of the RPP held in Sauraha, Chitwan on 21 Kartik has decided to hold the general convention only six months after the elections, as the House of Representatives elections are on 21 Falgun. 'The extended meeting has decided to hold the general convention within six months of the elections,' said spokesperson Manish Jha, 'Before the elections were announced, we had decided to hold the general convention on 7, 8 and 9 Falgun. But after the elections were announced, it was decided to postpone it.'

The RPP's general convention, which was supposed to be held this month, has been postponed by six months. Spokesperson Mohan Shrestha said that the general convention of the RPP was postponed due to the elections. 'The four-year term of the party's central committee ends this week. The general convention was planned to be held this month. But since there is a need to demonstrate for elections and a new understanding, it has been decided to postpone it for six months,' he said.

The general convention of JSP Nepal was held in Janakpur in 2081 Jestha. The general convention re-elected Upendra Yadav as the president unopposed. He has been the party president since 2064. JSP Nepal has a provision to hold a general convention every five years. JSP, which was formed under the leadership of Ashok Rai after splitting from JSP Nepal in 2081 Baisakh, has not held a general convention yet.

NEMKIPA held its eighth general convention in Falgun 2081. The general convention held in Bhaktapur elected Narayanman Bijukchhe as the president and Prem Suwal as the secretary. Bijukchhe has been the party president for more than four decades. LOSPA president Mahantha Thakur has been the president since the party's formation. The LOSPA's general convention was scheduled for last Bhadra, but it has been postponed. The LOSPA has decided to hold the general convention on Chaitra 6-7. Thakur formed the LOSPA in Bhadra 2078. The LOSPA was formed after separating from the JSP.

The Progressive Democratic Party, patronized by former Prime Minister Baburam Bhattarai, has formed a general convention organizing committee. On 21 December, the Nepal Samajwadi Party (New Shakti), the Progressive Campaign of former Maoist Deputy General Secretary Janardan Sharma, and former chief whip of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) Santosh Pariyar united to form the Pralopa. The central committee of Naya Shakti, which met in the first week of Asoj, had decided to hold the general convention within 6 months. The general convention organizing committee has been formed after the party unification. Leader Manushi Yami Bhattarai has said that the upcoming central committee will discuss the general convention.

The general convention of the Janmat Party held in Chaitra 2077 elected CK Raut as the president. General Secretary Chandan Singh said that even though it was time to hold the general convention, it was postponed due to the elections. The first general convention of the Nagarik Unmukti Party held in Poush 2080 elected Resham Chaudhary as the president unopposed. However, due to a dispute with the president, Ranjita Shrestha, the general convention was not recognized. After a complaint was filed, the Election Commission recognized the central committee chaired by Ranjita in Falgun 2080. Currently, Resham has registered another party called Nagarik Unmukti Party Nepal with the Election Commission, while the Nagarik Unmukti Party remains in Ranjita's name.

The national convention of the Jan Morcha was held in Chaitra 2077. Leader Manoj Bhatta said that even though it was time to hold the convention, it was postponed to Mangsir 2083. 'It has been decided to hold the convention in Mangsir next year because of the elections,' he said. Chitra Bahadur KC has been the president of the Janamorcha since 2044 BS. ‘The conference should be held in five years.’ Bhatta said.

The general convention of the CPN-Maoist (former Nepal Communist Party) led by Netra Bikram Chand was held in 2080 BS. According to the statute of the CPN-Maoist, which was registered for the first time in the House of Representatives elections, another general convention will be held in 2084 BS. The general convention of the Revolutionary Communist Party, which split from the Maoists in Asad 2069 BS, was held in Mangsir 2081 BS. The general convention elected former Maoist vice-president Mohan Vaidya as the general secretary. He has given the responsibility of general secretary to CP Gajurel, citing health reasons.
