Sher Bahadur Deuba, who became the unanimous president of the Nepal Students' Union, a sister organization of the Nepali Congress, in 2028 BS, continued to rise in politics in the following years. After becoming the Home Minister in 2048 BS and the Prime Minister for the first time in 2052 BS, power continued to revolve around Deuba.

Deuba, who made his home district Dadeldhura the base of parliamentary politics, was elected seven times in a row. He never suffered defeat from Dadeldhura. Only the leaders he wanted to promote within the Congress from the Far West got the opportunity.

He was elected party president twice, prime minister five times in 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018, and 2019, and parliamentarian seven times. After Deuba, who is now taking a break from active politics, there is talk of who will make a place in national politics from the Far West.

Another leader who has reached the second level of party politics from the Far West is Bhim Rawal. Rawal, who is also the former vice president of the UML, which recently merged with the Nepali Communist Party, is expected to be influential in national politics from the Far West.

Rawal, who has established himself as a leader who stands for nationalism, was ostracized by the party after competing against KP Oli for the presidency in the 10th general convention of the UML. Chairman Oli not only denied him a ticket in the last election, but also expelled him from the party last year. After that, Rawal's politics fell into confusion for about a year. Since then, he has neither joined any other party nor dared to form his own party.

He has been constantly criticizing UML Chairman Oli while running the Matrubhumi Jagran campaign. Amidst these ups and downs, Rawal, who recently returned to party politics through the Nepali Communist Party, is seen by many as a leader who can influence national politics from the far west with his old political background. He has served as UML Vice-President, Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Defense, Home, and Tourism in the past.

Just as Deuba was the sole leader of the Congress, Rawal was in a leading role in leftist politics in the Far West from 2051 to 2078. In that background, in the past, the Congress and communist cadres of the Far West used to look at Rawal as the next leader who could reach the center of national politics after Deuba. While the coordinators of the Nepali Communist Party, which Rawal is currently a member of, Pushpa Kamal Dahal and Madhav Kumar Nepal are saying that they will retire from active leadership, cadres close to him have started assessing Rawal's potential in the party leadership.

On the other hand, there are no leaders from the Far West who can immediately reach the leadership level of national politics in the Congress and UML. It is not yet clear who will take the place of Deuba's successor in the Congress.

NP Saud, Ramesh Lekhak, Bir Bahadur Balayar, Dilendra Prasad Badu, Badri Pandey and Nainsingh Mahar are also in the field of mutual competition within the party from the Far West. According to the understanding of the Congress leaders and workers here, many are interested in saying who Deuba will promote now.

Congress leaders Saud, Lekhak and Balayar have been strong supporters of Deuba since the past. Mahar of Dadeldhura, who has become the president of the Nepali Sangh, is also close to Deuba. Pandey and Badu, who are currently joint general secretaries, are leaders of other parties. There is a sense of disrespect among the workers that Saud and Balayar will clash to reach an influential position in Congress politics to represent the Far West. Saud, Balayar, Pandey, Badu and Lekhak, who have been ministers several times, are also trying to inherit Deuba's legacy.

Even though President Deuba had been keeping leader Lekhak close to him until the Genji movement, the movement has given him a setback. On the other hand, since Pandey and Badu belong to other groups, it is not clear how they will secure their political positions.

On the other hand, Nainsingh Mahar from Dadeldhura, who has been supporting President Deuba, is also seen trying to become the party's general secretary. But it is not clear from which group he will be able to get that position. In this background, most Congress leaders and workers have started estimating that Saud can secure the position.

All supporters within the Congress estimate that Saud, who has already become the president of the Nepali Sangh, may be Deuba's successor in the Far West due to the network among the workers. Some time ago, there was talk that leader Saud had become close to Shekhar Koirala. But a leader from the Far West close to Deuba said, ‘We asked him just yesterday, he made it clear that he only wanted to stay in touch with everyone but did not leave the Deuba team.’

According to the leader, Deuba returned home and met Gyanendra Karki, Prakash Sharan Mahat, Bal Krishna Khand and NP Saud in the first phase to find a solution to the current dilemma in the Congress.

‘The president met the general secretary only after that,’ the leader said. Another Congress leader close to Shekhar Koirala estimated that Saud is preparing to become the general secretary and that Deuba will also support him. The leader understands that when Saud becomes the general secretary, Balayar, who is currently the provincial president, can go to other office bearers.

UML leaders and cadres understand that there is a leadership vacuum within the UML in the Far West that can exert influence at the center of national politics. Lekhraj Bhatta, Karna Bahadur Thapa, Damodar Bhandari are leaders in leadership positions in UML from the Far West. Bhatta, who joined UML from the Maoists in the past, is in the provincial leadership of UML. But many understand that he has little loyalty to old UML cadres. Still, those close to him say that Bhatta's mind is troubled by the talk that UML cadres were also involved in the vandalism and arson of Bhatta's house in Attariya during the Genji movement.

On the other hand, considering the current situation, Thapa's future political position is not secure. Currently, there is a tripartite power struggle between Bhatta, Bhandari and Thapa in the Far West UML. Bhatta and Bhandari are supporters of Chairman Oli. But Thapa is clashing with Chairman Oli. That is why it is not certain where he will end up after the general convention. In the event that Thapa reached a new understanding with Chairman Oli before the general convention, the cadres also estimate that he will be the future leader of the UML Far West.

In the past, Rawal was seen as the political leader of the Far West after Deuba. Now that Deuba has taken a break from active politics, Rawal's return has made this time very important for him. Thus, many believe that Rawal from the left wing and Saud from the democratic wing may lead the future politics of the Far West.

Bir Bahadur Katuwal Deuba, an associate professor at Badimalika Campus in Bajura, argues that Rawal, who has taken a break from active politics, does not seem to be comfortable as a character who can represent the Far West at the center of national politics.

Katuwal says, ‘Rawal’s possibility seems close due to his relatively less controversial, outspoken and background of having reached the top level of politics before.’ But in the current situation, whether the Nepali Communist Party, to which Rawal is affiliated, will remain united or not, his influence in the party will also determine it.’

On the other hand, since no political face has emerged among the young generation of the Far West who can immediately assume central leadership, he understands that the only possibility now is from the old face.

Kailali civic leader Pramod Pathak says it is impossible to say when and who will take over the leadership of Nepal's politics. 'However, after Deuba's break from the Far West, it does not seem that the Congress has a person ready to take over the leadership in national politics. There is a leadership vacuum in the UML. In this situation, it can be assumed that Bhim Rawal, who has maintained his political energy and appears steadfast in his stance, can reach a leadership position from the Far West.'

What do the people of Dadeldhura say about Deuba after taking a break from leadership?
