Jitendra Sonal has been appointed as the Chief Minister of Madhesh Province amid obstruction and tension among the parties participating in the Provincial Assembly. After the Congress and UML raised slogans against the provincial chief, LOSPA provincial lawmaker Sonal was appointed as the Chief Minister late on Wednesday after security personnel were deployed.
After the resignation of the then Chief Minister Satish Kumar Singh, Provincial Chief Sumitra Subedi Bhandari had called for the formation of a new government. Sonal had submitted a claim for the post of Chief Minister on the proposal of five parties. She has been supported by JSP Nepal (19), Janmat (13), Maoists (9), LSP (8) and Unified Socialist (7). The newly appointed Chief Minister Sonal will assume the responsibility from Thursday.
UML and Congress have objected to Sonal's appointment. MPs including UML Parliamentary Party Leader Saroj Yadav and Congress Parliamentary Party Leader Krishna Prasad Yadav had met the Provincial Chief and requested not to recognize Sonal's claim as the Janmat Party had split.
According to Congress Parliamentary Party Leader Yadav, Sonal has been appointed with the support of 56 MPs, including 13 from Janmat. However, two Provincial Assembly members of Janmat Party went to the Provincial Election Office in Janakpur on Wednesday and chose Janaswaraj Party. The Congress and UML argue that the majority claim in favor of Sonal should not be recognized.
Congress and UML leaders had raised slogans in front of the provincial chief's office regarding this issue. However, the provincial chief's office has stated that the claim was recognized and appointed, saying that the party had not received a letter of separation/appointment from the Election Commission. Satish Kumar Singh (then acting Chief Minister) and Tribhuvan Sah (former minister), who became provincial assembly members from the Janmat Party, have chosen the Janaswaraj party led by Deepak Sah.
Both of them had gone to the election office on Wednesday and signed in favor of Janaswaraj. However, to stop them, Janaswaraj party leaders had raised slogans in front of the election office. Congress-UML leaders had raised slogans in favor of Singh. Singh and Sah were taken to the election office with the help of police. After that, both of them signed in favor of Janaswaraj and commented that the Janaswaraj party leaders had engaged in an unpolitical exercise.
Singh alleged that other MPs may also come in favor of Janaswaraj, but the Janmat leadership has been holding the MPs captive since morning. ‘Everyone has been kidnapped and held since morning. Everyone has been threatened,’ he said, ‘Janmat Party leaders are doing non-political work.’
Province Chief Bhandari had given time till 4 pm on Wednesday to submit their claims for government leadership. Leaders of 5 parties including Sonal had reached the Province Chief’s office at 10 am. They submitted their claims at 10:30 am. After that, Congress-UML leaders also submitted their claims for government formation under the leadership of Krishna Prasad Yadav.
Both claims of Shatrudhan Prasad Yadav, acting secretary of the Province Chief’s office, were signed by Janmat Parliamentary Party leader Mahesh Prasad Yadav. However, Sonal was appointed after Janmat Parliamentary Party leader Yadav submitted a letter supporting Sonal’s leadership to the Province Chief’s office.
