Who will listen to the pain of Bagmati?

I am the Bagmati river. For several years, my stream has been running in the Kathmandu Valley. About 50 years ago people living here used to drink me as holy water. Many people used to come to my place to fill water and take bath and wash clothes.

Not only every distant person in Nepal, but people coming to Nepal from abroad used to bathe in the holy Bagmati and see Pashupatinath and return to their homes with the belief that they can go to heaven.

At that time I was very happy. No one had the strength to stop my flow. Nor would anyone dare turn my sanctity into a cesspool of unholy filth. Even during the rainy season, my flow was not restless. Because, at that time, neither many houses were built in this valley, nor did the settlements grow. Later, Kathmandu Valley was gradually made the capital city of the country. Gradually the Raithane residents were displaced. Seeing the convenience of everything, many people started coming to work here and their desire started to buy a few annas of land in this valley i.e. Kathmandu, Bhaktapur and Lalitpur. Even the people who come to work temporarily in this valley are attracted to settle here.

It may be called the capital city, because every facility was available here first, the population began to increase. Many arable farmlands gradually turned into human settlements. The pressure of people increased to such an extent that even in a house built on a small area, I myself became the channel for its drainage.

When lightning flashes in the sky and heavy rain falls - then nature forces me to be rich. During the rainy season I am forced to walk and drift like a faint. But who will listen to my pain and story pain?
