Microfinance victims who had been taken to the Gaushala Dharmashala at Pashupati for shelter have been sent back. Although the police themselves had transported them there by vehicle, they were turned away due to limited rooms, according to Laxmi Ghimire, an activist against microfinance exploitation.
“At present, all the women sisters are heading towards Maitighar Mandala. The area has been cordoned off at Setopul with a heavy presence of police security forces,” she said.
Microfinance victims have arrived in Kathmandu on Saturday for the capital march program organized by the Farmers and Workers Movement Against Microfinance and Financial Exploitation, Nepal. On Sunday morning, they started a rally from Sanepa in Lalitpur and held a corner assembly at Shantibatika at 3 p.m. In the evening, however, the police did not allow them to hold a sit-in or stay at Shantibatika.
The microfinance victims are still uncertain about where they will stay. Not only do they lack accommodation, but there is also no arrangement for food.
Despite paying installments for years, the loan has not decreased, their fields have been lost, and they have been displaced—bearing these grievances, microfinance victims from across the country have come to Kathmandu demanding justice.
