Foreign Minister Shishir Khanal has said that diplomatic initiatives are being taken to release Suresh Prasad Singh, 55, and Nagendra Prasad Singh, 60, of Sarlahi-5 Balar, who have been in Indian jail for 20 days. After the news was published in Kantipur on Tuesday about the Singh brothers who were arrested at the border while going to buy groceries and are in Indian jail, Minister Khanal said that talks are also being held through the Nepali Embassy in New Delhi. He informed that both of them will be released on bail today as coordination is being done with the embassy in Delhi to release them. ‘I have been in contact with the embassy for three days to get Singh brothers released from Indian jail,’ he said. ‘The embassy has received a message asking them to send their family members today.’
The farmer brothers who had gone to buy fertilizer have been in Indian jail for 20 days.
They were arrested on Ashad 17 along with 2 sacks of urea and 6 sacks of DAP they had purchased from the Indian border market Sonvarsha after the government failed to provide them with fertilizer. Before sowing, they had reached the border market Sonvarsha like in previous years to procure fertilizer. However, while they were bringing the fertilizer on bicycles, they were arrested by a joint team of the Indian Department of Agriculture and the Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB) on charges of smuggling fertilizer.
