As the government has failed to implement the agreement, victims of meter interest lending have begun the third phase of their protest march to Kathmandu, saying that the oppression by moneylenders has only increased.
The 'Justice March Against Meter Interest' began on Thursday from Janakpur in Dhanusha, covering a distance of 17 kilometers on the first day and spending the night at Durgatol, Naya Bazar, and Mahendranagar in Dhanusha.
Today, on the second day of the justice march, the walk to Kathmandu began at 6:45 a.m. from Mahendranagar in Dhanusha. More than 400 people from 35 districts are participating in the 'Meter Interest Victims' Protest March–3'. Participants are carrying their personal belongings in bags as they walk.
Awadhesh Kushwaha, president of the Nepal Farmers and Workers Movement Against Meter Interest, said that the third phase of the protest march was launched with demands including the annulment of fake documents, the creation of a powerful special act against meter interest, the formation of a tribunal against meter interest, investigation of moneylenders' assets, return of victims' property, and assurance of fair financial transactions. He stated that the march, which started from Janakpur, would reach Kathmandu within a maximum of 15 days.
Previously, victims of meter interest lending have already held protest marches twice. Although the government has formed three commissions and one task force in the past, the problems of the victims remain unchanged.
Most recently, on 29 Falgun 2080, a four-point agreement was reached between the government and the meter interest victims. The agreement was made in the presence of then Deputy Prime Minister and Home Minister Rabi Lamichhane, between the government negotiation team and representatives of the victims.
According to the agreement, a three-member commission was to be formed to submit a report to the government within three months in accordance with the 'Commission of Inquiry Act, 2026 (1969)'.
Additionally, it was agreed that the commission would re-investigate complaints previously submitted to the police as well as new complaints received from applicants after the formation of the commission.
