The Attorney General's Office has issued a letter to government attorneys' offices across the country to postpone the hearing of criminal cases related to the Gen-G movement.
Narayan Dutt Kaden, who has been the Attorney General since the formation of the Balendra Shah-led government, has been in office. The directive came after the government moved forward with the process of forming a task force to study whether or not the cases filed during the movement can be withdrawn.
The Personnel Administration Branch of the Government Attorney's Office wrote to all high government attorney offices and district government attorney offices on Asad 19, asking them to stop the court process. As per the decision taken by the Ministry of Home Affairs on Asad 18, the government is forming a task force to investigate and recommend criminal charges filed in incidents related to the Gen-G movement. The hearing has been postponed until the report of the same task force is received.
Criminal cases filed before various courts and case officers on charges of involvement in the incidents of Bhadra 23 and 24, 2082 will be affected by this.
The letter signed by Assistant Attorney General Biswas Timilsina has instructed to ‘facilitate the postponement of the hearing of the related cases until the report is submitted by the said task force’.
The government had decided to form a study task force after complaints were received that complaints had been filed in various districts against those involved in the Gen-G incident and that cases had been registered while the investigation was underway.
According to Gen-G leader Uparjun Chamling, 935 people have been charged in various courts. The Attorney General's Office has stated that a letter has been written to postpone the hearing of the case as some parents have protested at their homes, saying that they are being detained for participating in the Gen-G movement.
