Nepali ultra runner Sunmaya Budha, the winner of the 19th edition of the Lavaredo Ultra Trail 120K held in Italy, has returned home. She was welcomed at the Tribhuvan International Airport on Wednesday.

She was welcomed by well-wishers led by Rajan Khatri, Vice President of Nepal Adventure Running Federation, with banners, bouquets and food on Monday.

Budha created new history by winning the 120-kilometer Lavaredo Ultra Trail held in Italy on June 27. She also set a new record by covering the difficult distance of 120 kilometers in 13 hours, 33 minutes and 18 seconds. The trail has an ascent of more than 5,800 meters. With this time, she improved the course record that had stood for 11 years by more than 6 minutes.

The competition was very exciting till the end. On the final downhill, she overtook Australia's Lucy Bartholomew and eventually won by a margin of about 1 minute and 30 seconds. This victory is Budha's first title of 2026. Sunmaya, winner of the 120 km Lavaredo Ultra Trail, returns home

Last year, she won 4 international competitions including the Hong Kong 100 Ultra (102 km), Chengdu Trail (60 km), Mount Yun by UTMB (30 km) and Ultra Trail Cape Town (99.4 km). She also became the first Asian athlete to win a medal in the competition by finishing second in the World Mountain and Trail Running Championships (81.2 km). She also set a new course record in the Hong Kong Ultra.

In 2024, she won 3 international competitions including 2 in China and 1 in Switzerland. Budha, who won 5 titles in 2023, finished second in the UTMB Mont Blanc (99.1 km) in 2022 and won the gold medal in the 106.9 km race of the HOKA Chiang Mai by UTAAB in 2021.

The competition organizers have declared Sunmaya the ‘New Queen’ of the ‘La Sportiva Lavaredo Ultra Trail-120K’. They have also praised her running. Sunmaya Budha is from Patarasi Rural Municipality of Jumla.
