After the federal government started preparing to clear encroached areas in other districts after the Kathmandu Valley, landless squatters, freed Kamaiyas and other communities have started protesting in various districts.
On Monday, they submitted a memorandum to the Prime Minister through demonstrations in Makawanpur, Bardiya and other districts. Landless squatters of Makawanpur submitted a memorandum to the District Administration Office protesting the government's eviction of squatters.
They had taken out a rally from Thanabharyang, Hetauda Sub-metropolitan City-11, demanding management instead of evicting them. They reached the District Administration Office at 11 am on Monday. They protested and submitted a memorandum to Chief District Officer Basanta Adhikari and Mayor of Hetauda Sub-metropolitan City Meena Kumari Lama.
After the Ministry of Home Affairs instructed the district administration to collect records of encroached settlements in other districts after vacating the squatter settlements in Kathmandu, the squatter settlers of Makawanpur are also suspicious. Chief District Officer Adhikari informed that the work of collecting records of squatters is underway as per the instructions of the Ministry of Home Affairs. Landless squatters from Hetauda Sub-metropolitan City, Manahari and Bakaiya Rural Municipality participated in the protest.
Demand to revoke the 15-day notice of the Forest Office in Bardiya
On Monday, landless squatters and freed squatters also demonstrated in Gulariya, the headquarters of Bardiya. Landless squatters and freed squatters from all eight municipalities of the district gathered in Gulariya amid heavy rains to protest against the government's attempt to remove encroachments. They shouted slogans such as the need to stop the 15-day notice and stop the dozer terror.
A large number of squatters and freed Kamaiyas participated in the protest jointly organized by the Joint Land Rights Struggle Committee, the Muktakamai Land Rights Struggle Committee, Land Rights and Workers' Organization Nepal, All Nepal Sukumvasi Organization and the National Land Rights Forum.
In the memorandum submitted to Acting Chief District Officer Ashok Bhandari, it has been demanded that the 15-day notice to vacate the settlement published by the Division Forest Office on April 14 be withdrawn immediately, and that the Land Act, Forest Act and Park Act be amended and the current settlement be managed. They have warned that the government will conduct additional protest programs if it is forced.
