Landless and unorganized settlers living in the Motipur area of Butwal have protested against the government's decision. They have also submitted a memorandum to Butwal Sub-metropolitan City Chief Khelraj Pandey. The locals have become agitated after the Motipur Industrial Area Management Limited wrote letters and even deployed dozers in various places to vacate the Motipur area.
They gathered at the market place in Raniganj and demonstrated with various placards. During the protest, they raised slogans like 'Stop the forced eviction campaign', 'Squatters are not a desire but a compulsion' and 'Stop the dozer terror'. Earlier on Saturday, squatters from Dang and Pokhara had also protested against the government's move. They have demanded that squatters not be evicted without an alternative.
Raniganj Settlement Protection Committee Coordinator Chhabilal Raskoti mentioned that citizens who have been living there for years have structures like schools, playgrounds and markets.
More than 3,000 households are in danger of being displaced after the Motipur Industrial Zone was declared. Mayor Pandey, while receiving the memorandum, stated that there was already some agreement with the locals regarding the Motipur Industrial Zone and expressed his commitment to find a solution based on that without causing any inconvenience to the locals.
Meanwhile, the squatters of Pokhara have also announced a protest against the government's move. They announced the protest after the Pokhara Metropolitan City gave an ultimatum to remove the structures built illegally on public land within 35 days. The Landless and Unorganized Settlement Concerns Struggle Committee Kaski held a press conference in Pokhara on Sunday and announced a phased protest.
Committee co-coordinator Ramesh Balkoti warned of strong retaliation if the metropolis tries to use bulldozers on squatter settlements in the name of development and good governance. According to him, this step taken without proper management of thousands of landless people could lead to social and political clashes in Pokhara.
