Former Prime Minister and UML Chairman KP Sharma Oli's father, Mohan Prasad Oli, passed away on Friday morning at the age of 95. He was admitted to the Nepal-Korea Friendship City Hospital in Gatthaghar, Bhaktapur after his health deteriorated a few days ago. He was born on November 2, 1987, in Iwa, Tehrathum. Dhanapati Sangraula opened a school in the village. He used to run away to study. His brothers, however, did not like going to school. After seeing him running away to school, his mother enrolled him in the school, saying that he wanted to study. For that, the teacher had to be given one pathi chalam per woman. There were three women's schools in the winter. Mohan Prasad studied for all three months. At school, he used to recite poems to the teacher. He memorized many poems and 'silok' composed in his childhood even in the latter half of his life. He got married in 2001 at the age of 14. In 2008, his eldest son, Khadga Prasad (KP), was born. KP lost his mother at a young age, said Mohan Prasad, a strong supporter. Deprived of maternal affection in his childhood, KP also lost his father's trust in the latter half of his life. After the death of his wife, Mohan Prasad married for the second time in the mountains. A son and three daughters were born from the second wife. After the death of his mother, KP was raised by his grandmother Rammaya.
Mohan Prasad migrated to Jhapa in 2023. At that time, there was a malaria epidemic in Jhapa. Initially, he started living in shelters. He was engaged in farming. In 2031, Mohan Prasad faced a difficult situation after the flood of Biring Khola washed away his family farm. At that time, he had to take refuge with a neighbor. At that time, his son KP was active in the 'Jhapa Rebellion' and the news of his arrest caused him double pain.
In 2032/033, the government rehabilitated the flood victims in the Prithvinagar area. Flood victim Mohan Prasad reached Prithvinagar in the hope of getting land. However, the then Panchayat government deprived him of the land after learning that he was KP's father. Eventually, he took refuge in a neighbor's house for a long time. Later, he bought a small house and built a small house. That too burned down in a fire when KP was the Home Minister.
His life, which he spent a long time in the rural environment of Jhapa, was simple, hardworking and full of experience. For many years, he lived in Jhapa as a farmer and took care of his family responsibilities. Before 2072 BS, Mohan Prasad did not visit Kathmandu much.
However, after his son became the Prime Minister for the first time, he moved to Kathmandu from Jhapa. Before that, he lived with his younger son JP at his house in Prithvinagar, Jhapa. He lived in Baluwatar all four times with Oli, who was the Prime Minister four times. At other times, he lived in Jhapa sometimes and sometimes in Balkot.
The memories of his village, relatives, in-laws and neighbors always came to him. He gave importance to the relationship between the village and his family throughout his life. In an interview given on a YouTube channel called 'Everest Nepal' 7 years ago, he said that he did not like living in Kathmandu. ‘The police would come down from the house and chase him, and if he asked me to go out for a walk somewhere, the police would chase him,’ he had said, ‘I felt very embarrassed, I felt like I wouldn’t be able to go to Kathmandu.’
Mohan Prasad was naturally talkative, eloquent and humorous. He used to use popular proverbs and sayings to answer in a witty manner. Babu’s nature is also seen in KP.
Mohan Prasad also had deep faith in astrology. He could also do fortune telling and fortune telling. ‘Other fortune tellers need a lot, I don’t need anything,’ he had laughed in that interview. He would give a general explanation about the horoscope by looking at the position of the planets and constellations. He claimed that he could cure toothaches and pinworms with herbs. However, as he grew older, he gradually gave up these activities.
When his son started politics, he initially did not like it. Later, when he became a leader known throughout the country, he decided not to interfere in his son's political journey. KP Sana could not tolerate injustice and tyranny. His intention was to end the discrimination between the rich and the poor. That is why he became a communist, Mohan Prasad says. After his son became the Prime Minister, he hoped that the gap between the rich and the poor would decrease in the country.
Mohan Prasad, who had faced many ups and downs in his life, had to face unexpected pain in the latter half of his life. He was in Baluwatar with his son during the 'Gen-G' movement on Bhadra 23 and 24. Amid the arson and vandalism that took place after the protest turned violent, he and his son KP boarded a helicopter on Bhadra 24 and took refuge under the protection of the army.
Since the protest, Mohan Prasad had been living in the house of his younger daughter Kaushila Koirala in Gatthaghar. According to his younger son-in-law Yamnath Koirala, the Nepali Army had brought him there three days after the protest. ‘Since then, my father has been with us,’ Koirala said. After the houses in Balakot and Jhapa were burned down, the elderly Mohan Prasad once again became like a squatter.
Mohan Prasad will always be remembered by his relatives and extended family for his simple life and clear thinking and philosophy of life that emerged from his experiences. He was cheerful, cheerful and good-natured and has passed away forever, leaving behind memories filled with many experiences for his family and relatives.
