The Election Commission has written to the Press Council to remove the video documentary released by the BBC about the Genji movement on Bhadra 23 and 24.
The documentary ‘Shot Like the Enemies: Inside Nepal’s Genji Uprising’ prepared by BBC World Service mentions that the then Inspector General of Police Chandrakuber Khapung gave the order to open fire on unarmed protesters during the Genji movement.
The Commission’s acting Chief Election Commissioner Ram Prasad Bhandari informed that the letter was sent to the council on Thursday. Talking to Kantipur, he said, ‘We have instructed to remove it immediately. If it is not removed, we will take action as per the election law.’
Press Council Monitoring Officer Mahendra Singh confirmed that the Election Commission had received a letter about the BBC documentary.
The public documentary includes internal police documents. The document shows that the call sign 'Peter One' ordered police officers to 'use necessary force' 10 minutes after the curfew was imposed and that the curfew was imposed at 12:30.
'Peter One' is the call sign used by the then Inspector General of Nepal Police Chandrakuber Khapung, the BBC reported, citing a source.
'Khapung has not denied giving the order to open fire.' The order came from a security committee made up of Nepal's top security forces. 'IGP Khapung had not given any such order before the committee's decision,' the documentary says, quoting a Nepal Police spokesperson.
