What you should know
The tension in Siraha Prison has not yet been brought under control. The tension that began after the District Security Committee took 13 people, including prison warden Indrajit Yadav, into custody during a monitoring exercise on Monday, has not yet been brought under control.
During the monitoring, they were taken into custody after a pistol, two rounds of bullets, Rs 120,000 in cash, cigarettes, tobacco and other items were found inside the prison.
They are being investigated in the custody of the District Police Office, Siraha. However, at the same time, prisoners close to Naike Yadav started a protest by setting fire inside the prison. Even though security personnel controlled the fire by using water cannons from outside the prison, they are still continuing the protest inside the prison.
Siraha Police Spokesperson Ramesh Bahadur Pal said that they are throwing water, stones, and banging cymbals from inside the prison. He said that Nepal Police, along with the Armed Police Force and the Nepal Army, are currently deployed to secure the prison and efforts are being made to control the situation.
Kantipur had reported last year with evidence about illegal activities ranging from alcohol to drugs being traded inside the prison with the connivance of the police administration, and extortion in the name of phone calls and donations.
After the Kantipur news, the investigation committee formed under the command of the DSP of Nepal Police had submitted a 90-page investigation report to the District Security Committee. However, the administration, which has been reluctant to implement the report, launched an operation in the prison on Monday after criticism.
