Bhadrapur, the district headquarters of Jhapa, is always considered strong in terms of security. This is because there is a strong presence of all three security agencies - Nepal Police, Armed Police Force and Nepal Army. Security arrangements in this area have been tightened further in view of the upcoming elections.

A strange and tragic incident took place here on Thursday evening. In the incident called ‘syringe attack’, Khem Dhakal of Bhadrapur Municipality-10 lost his life  . This incident did not only end the life of one person, it plunged the entire city into fear and suspicion.

In a city considered safe, that too in the evening, an attack using a syringe is itself a serious and unnatural incident.   This is why the ‘syringe attack’ has now become a matter of concern across the country.   What happened in the ‘syringe attack’ incident? Let’s understand in 5 questions:

How did the incident happen?

According to DSP Khagendra Khadka, spokesperson of the District Police Office, Jhapa, Khem Dhakal was going from a neighbor’s house to his residence on Thursday evening.   During that time, unknown persons attacked him on the way.   The incident became even more mysterious as there were no eyewitnesses. Dhakal was found unconscious after the attack. He died during treatment at a local hospital.

What is the truth behind the incident?

Initial police investigations have indicated that this was not a simple fight or a sudden attack but a planned attack as well as an old grudge. The fact that a syringe was used in the attack, rather than a sharp weapon or bullet, is considered an unnatural and serious matter. The police are collecting CCTV footage from the area around the incident, mobile call details and forensic evidence. The police claim that the truth will be made public soon as the attacker has also been arrested.

Why was a syringe used in the attack?

According to sources involved in the investigation, it is suspected that the purpose of using a syringe was to prevent the victim from immediately resisting or to render him unconscious. The police have stated that the substance used in the syringe will be clear only after the post-mortem and forensic report. However, the police suspect that the doctor may have used a substance used to sedate the patient before the surgery. The police suspect that Dhakal may have died due to an overdose of anesthesia used in the syringe.

What could be the reason for the attack?

According to the police, the incident could have been caused by personal enmity with the deceased, a family dispute or other social reasons. However, the police have not found concrete evidence. The police are also investigating the incident by linking it to personal reasons. Since the attack appears to have been targeted and not accidental, it is suspected that the reason may be deeper.

What are the unresolved issues in this incident?

Various discussions have started about the relationship between the family of the deceased Dhakal and the 26-year-old Dipesh Kumar Singh of Siraha, who was arrested after the incident. Both Singh and Dhakal's daughters are studying MBBS at the BP Koirala Institute of Health Sciences in Dharan. The police have also started an investigation into this relationship between the Singh and Dhakal families. 'But the police have not yet formally confirmed this matter,' says police spokesperson Khadka, 'Such a claim may be one aspect of the investigation, but without evidence, a conclusion cannot be drawn.'
