Basant Panchami is being celebrated today.

What you should know

Celebrated every year on the fifth day of the bright month of Magh, Shree Panchami is being celebrated across the country today with the ritual worship of Goddess Saraswati, the patron saint of learning.

It is believed that worshipping Saraswati on the day of Basant Panchami will increase knowledge and wisdom. Today, devotees throng Saraswati temples across the country to worship. It is customary to start learning the alphabet from this day itself for young children who have not been sent to school. It is believed that if you teach them to read and write on this day, you will get good knowledge.

Saraswati, the goddess of knowledge, who has fair complexion like the moon and holds a veena and a book in her hand, is called by devotees by names like Bharati, Sharada, Hanswahini, Jaganmata, Bagishwari, Kaumari, Varadayini, Buddhidatri, Brahmacharini, Chandraghanta and Bhuvaneshwari.

Since she is the goddess of knowledge and creation, especially writers, artists, journalists, teachers and students worship their art objects such as pens, paper, brushes and musical instruments as Saraswati, while tantrics worship her as Taradevi for the attainment of tantra.

It is believed that the sun moves northwards and the days become longer and the spring season begins, so this day is also called 'Vasant Panchami'. Saraswati Puja has great importance as worshipping Brahmayani, the consort of Brahma, who is famous as Bagdevi in the Rig Veda, gives one all kinds of knowledge, accomplishments and wisdom. The Gandharva Purana mentions that if one worships Saraswati on this day and starts studying, one attains all achievements.

It is believed that on this day, one does not have to visit the temple to perform social and religious functions such as marriage, fasting, keeping a cave and bel viva (ihi). However, since Venus is setting this year, these auspicious deeds are not performed. On this day, children start their education and also get their nose and ears pierced.

Devotees, especially students, have been thronging Saraswati temples in Swayambhu, Maitidevi and Neel Saraswati in Gairidhara and Lele in Lalitpur since this morning to offer prayers. It is believed that if the seven grains offered to Saraswati are not touched by the teeth, knowledge and wisdom will blossom in the blue, and the light of consciousness will be received from Vidyadevi.

Basanta Shravan

On this occasion, it is customary for the head of state to perform Basanta Shravan at the Nasal Chowk of Hanumandhoka Durbar. Laxman Panthi, Executive Director of Nepal Panchanga Nirikh Bikash Samiti, informed that President Ram Chandra Poudel gave the time to perform Basanta Shravan at the auspicious time of 10:27 am.
