Mamta Baral from Pokhara has been in Australia for 3 years. After completing her PCL nursing, she worked for 4 years in two hospitals in Pokhara. Her salary was 18,000. She says, "Household expenses are another matter, and I had to think ten times before buying the necessary things."

She is currently working for ‘Yazd Care’ in Australia. ‘Everyone dreams of working in the country, mine too, but despite investing a lot in studies, I did not get the salary I expected,’ Mamta said, ‘At least now I do not have to worry about money when thinking about buying something for myself and my family.’ She says that nurses are forced to go abroad due to low salaries and lack of job security in Nepal.

Kriti Napit from Chitwan is working as an ICU nurse in a trauma center in the US. She has been in the US for only 3 months looking for a nursing career. She is successfully using the experience, skills and discipline she has gained in 10 years in Nepal at the international level. She said that working in an environment full of cutting-edge technology, a well-organized health system and professional respect has increased her confidence.

Napit started working as a staff nurse at Tribhuvan University Teaching Hospital in 2015 on a contract basis. After two years of continuous hard work, she passed the TU Service Commission exam and got a permanent job, and served in a teaching hospital for a decade. Her salary while in Nepal was 60,000. She says that the salary of a permanent government nurse is better than that of other private hospitals.

‘Nurses have to get a nursing license for the country they are going to, which is not possible in Nepal,’ she said, ‘I passed the Nclex exam in India.’ She says that the demand for nurses is high, and both the income and ‘career’ are good, so the number of Nepali nurses leaving the country has increased.

According to the Nepal Nursing Council, 52,255 nurses have left the country since 2059. So far, the highest number is 29,385 Nepali nurses in the US. In 2078/79, 4,000 nurses had reached the US, and the next year, 2080/81, this number increased to 6,000.

After the US, the countries with the most Nepali nurses are Australia, UAE, Denmark, Britain, Canada, and others. There are 12,924 Nepali nurses in Australia, 4,474 in the UAE, 1,411 in Denmark, 1,282 in the UK, and 978 in Canada. The council has records of Nepali nurses going to 17 countries, including these.

Sameer Kumar Adhikari, Joint Spokesperson of the Ministry of Health, says that this profession has become more attractive than others as the demand for nurses in the global market is increasing. ‘The number of nurses going abroad has increased because they can easily go abroad, have good income, and have a secure future,’ he said.

Tara Pokharel, former president of the Nepal Nursing Association, says that people of every profession are going abroad due to the unstable government, few opportunities, and low labor prices. ‘They studied for 8/10 lakhs, and the salary is 15-18 thousand, and who wants to stay in the country?’ she said, ‘There is no professional security.’
