Nearly 100,000 people have applied to the Election Police in five days for security in the upcoming House of Representatives elections.
Nepal Police and Armed Police Force (APF) have opened applications for recruitment to the police and armed forces through their respective offices in all 77 districts since December 25, and about 100,000 applications have been received till Tuesday.

According to Nepal Police SSP Gopal Chandra Bhattarai, the number of people who applied for recruitment to the police and armed forces was 88,763 as of Monday, but this number has reached about 100,000 as of Tuesday evening. He said that a comprehensive report of those who applied on Tuesday is in the process of being received.
SSP Bhattarai said that the number of applicants has decreased slightly compared to the past. ‘This time, out of about 1.5 lakh applications for both the police and the armed security forces, the number of applicants has reached 1 lakh in 5 days, now there are only 2 days left to apply.’
According to the Police Headquarters, 82,884 people have applied for deployment under the Nepal Police and 5,879 for deployment under the Armed Police Force as of Wednesday, of which 22,023 are female applicants under the police and 1,073 are male applicants under the armed forces.
Detailed details of those who applied on Tuesday are yet to come. SSP Bhattarai also said that if the specified number of applications is not received, a few more days may be added. The government is preparing to mobilize about 337,000 security personnel for the upcoming House of Representatives member election.
Of which, about 188,000 are being mobilized from the Nepal Army, Nepal Police, Armed Police Force and the National Investigation Department. In addition, applications were opened for the recruitment of about 150,000 'Election Police' (formerly temporary police) with a 40-day work period. For that, on Thursday, the Nepal Police and the Armed Police Force opened recruitment for the specified number from their respective offices in the districts. According to the Police Headquarters, the number of applicants for temporary police recruitment was three times higher in the previous elections, but this time the number of applicants has decreased. Those who are recruited in the Election Police will receive the basic salary and clothing and ration allowance of the police and Armed Police personnel.
According to the ‘Unified (Police and Armed Police Force Nepal) Procedures on Recruitment, Selection, Appointment and Mobilization of Election Police’-2082, an election police officer will be provided with a salary of Rs. 34,000 for 40 days at a rate of Rs. 869 per day and 40 paisa, a ration allowance for 40 days as determined by the District Rate Determination Committee (varies according to the district), Rs. 846 per person (transportation allowance) for going to and returning from the place assigned to the election, a lump sum of Rs. 1,200 for lunch expenses at the rate of Rs. 300 per day for four days, and a one-time clothing allowance as determined by the police and the armed forces in that district according to the weather in the district.’ It is stated that all the amounts thus provided will be sent to the bank account of the concerned election police officer.
If these human resources deployed in the election are injured in the course of their duties, the injured person will be provided with the compensation amount as determined by the government, and in case of death, the next of kin will be provided with the compensation amount as determined by the government. The criteria approved by the Ministry of Home Affairs also mention that those who do not go to the designated place before the election and do not fulfill their responsibilities will not be given any of the specified facilities. Similarly, if the first election is canceled or postponed, even if they are in training, their appointment will be automatically canceled/suspended, as mentioned in the procedure related to the election police.
The Election Commission has determined 10,967 polling stations and 23,112 polling stations across the country. The polling stations have also been classified into three groups: highly sensitive, sensitive and normal based on the security risks, challenges and past activities of the place. In the past, the security management of the polling stations was done by the police and temporary police and the external security management was done by the army and the armed police. Although the form of security mobilization will be the same this time too, the government is preparing to increase the role and responsibilities and the number of manpower. A recruitment selection committee has been formed in the respective districts under the coordination of the Chief District Officer for the selection of election police recruitment. Candidates should have completed 18 years of age and not exceeded 54 years of age by the last date of application for recruitment. Accordingly, the maximum age should be born in 2028 Magh and the minimum age should be born in 2064 Magh (completed 18 years and not exceeded 54 years as per the last date of application).
According to the criteria approved by the Ministry of Home Affairs, candidates must be a Nepali citizen, able to read and write, not have been convicted by a court for a criminal offense that shows moral turpitude, not have membership in any political party at the time of recruitment, be physically and mentally healthy, not be a member of a terrorist or subversive organization, be at least 5 feet tall, have a chest width of 31 to 33 inches, weigh 50 kg for men and at least 4 feet 10 inches tall, weigh 42 kg for women and not be pregnant. Among those who have applied to join the Election Police, those who have retired and gratuity from the Nepal Army, Nepal Police, Armed Police Force, former forest guards, those who have applied for various posts for recruitment in the army/police from 2081 Magh to mid-2082 Poush and have passed the physical fitness and health test will be required to submit an admission letter, those who have worked satisfactorily as temporary police in the House of Representatives, Provincial Assembly and local level elections in the past (as per the temporary police certificate), and those who have retired from service after working in security agencies of foreign countries will be given priority in recruitment.
