The Ministry of Education has issued a notice stating that teachers, professors, and employees working in government service are not allowed to engage in political activities and will be dismissed from their posts if found to be doing so.
The ministry has issued a notice stating, 'No professional act has given anyone working in such a service the right to engage in political activities other than bargaining for professional rights and interests, and I draw your attention to the fact that there is a provision for legal action up to and including dismissal from office if found involved in political activities.'
The circular issued by Education Minister Pun states that the ministry has decided not to recognize various associations of teachers, professors and employees that are directly or indirectly mentioned as fraternal organizations or benevolent organizations in the rules of political parties.
The ministry has also called for the reorganization of associations active in the education sector, including the Teachers' Federation, the Professors' Association, and other organizations, with the aim of making them independent of political character and professional in nature.
Sumana Shrestha had also started a similar initiative when she became the Education Minister from the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Party in 2081 Baisakh. Soon after she became the minister, the Ministry of Education had requested the Election Commission to provide details of the party's executive committee to identify teachers affiliated with political parties. Sumana had said at the time that she had requested the details of the political party's executive committee from the Commission so that it would be easier to take action against teachers affiliated with parties. Sumana had said at the time, "As long as party politics prevails everywhere, it will never improve. Therefore, I have called for it yesterday. It is clearly written in Sub-section 5 of Section 16 (e) of our Education Act, 2028, that if a teacher or employee is found to be a member of the executive committee of a political party, the teacher or employee will be removed from his post." Two months after taking charge of the ministry, Sumana had claimed that 825 teachers had renounced their membership of political parties.
