Singer Neetu Poudel, who attempted suicide by setting herself on fire at singer and musician Babul (Dhan Bahadur) Giri's studio last Saturday, has died. Giri was arrested by police after Poudel died at 8:30 am on Friday while undergoing treatment.
Nitu, who was taken to the hospital with burns on more than 55 percent of her body, died at the Burn Hospital in Kirtipur, said District Police Range Kathmandu SP and spokesperson Pawan Kumar Bhattarai. Following a complaint from Poudel's family, the police have arrested Giri and started an investigation into the case of abetment to suicide.
Before attempting self-immolation, Nitu had posted on her Facebook status on Saturday that she was taking a big decision. Nitu's father Ramesh Prasad Poudel said that her daughter committed self-immolation because Babul Giri had only physically abused her by falsely promising her marriage. 'When we proposed marriage to our daughter, she was hesitant. She said, "Don't be tense, I will do it myself." She also said that when it was time for the wedding, I would tell my brother,' said Nitu's father Poudel. 'My daughter has been in a relationship with Babul Giri for 8 years.' Two years ago, she had told her younger sister that she would marry Babul Giri or else she wouldn't.'
After Giri's father passed away, Neetu had also spoken to her own mother. She had said that she would talk to Giri during Dashain and finalize the marriage. The Poudel family is currently mourning the news of her death. After Neetu's self-immolation, people close to her say that she has been under stress because of Babul since a year ago. 'She has been telling her friends that even Babul's family is threatening my daughter, mentally torturing her, accusing her of being a characterless person and saying that the family is not going to run because of this,' Ramesh said. 'For some time, her daughter had also been on a dirty face. She used to say that she was not well.'
According to her father's complaint to the police, on that day, Babul had called Neetu to the studio saying that he wanted to finalize the love affair. It is mentioned that Babul said, 'The family members including Didi Anjali, Meena and Dai Ham Giri have not accepted the relationship with you, that is why the marriage cannot take place.' The complaint states that after an argument, the daughter said that the marriage cannot take place, so she set herself on fire due to her intense love.
Father Ramesh also accused Babul of taking the help he received from his daughter when he was in a normal state and ignoring him after some songs were played. Singer Neetu Poudel Death Case: Understand in Five Questions and Answers
