India and China have once again agreed to open bilateral trade through Lipulekh Pass. Lipulek Pass is a land of Nepal within 56 km from Limpiyadhura, the western border of Nepal. During the visit of Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi to India, an agreement was reached between the two countries to open border trade through the Lipulekh Pass.
On the invitation of India's National Security Adviser Ajit Doval, Chinese Foreign Minister Yi visited India on 2nd and 3rd of Bhadra.
On Tuesday night, the Indian Ministry of Foreign Affairs mentioned the opening of bilateral trade through the Lipulekh Pass on the issues of bilateral agreement.
Point No. 9 of the agreement issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs mentions the topic of opening border trade . It is said- 'Both sides have agreed to reopen border trade through the three designated trading points of Lipulek Pass, Shipki La Pass and Nathu La Pass.' Earlier in 2072 (year 2015) there was an agreement between the Prime Ministers of India and China to trade through Lipulek Pass. When Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited China on May 14, 2015, there was an agreement between his counterpart Li Keqiang to increase bilateral trade through the Lipulek crossing. At that time, point number 28 of the joint statement issued on May 15 mentioned the agreement.
It was said- 'Both sides agreed to expand border trade from Nathu La, Kiangla/Lipulek Pass to Shipki La Pass.' There was strong opposition in Nepal to the agreement of India and China to expand trade through the land of Nepal without informing Nepal. The government of Nepal formally objected to the agreement made by India and China. Objecting to that agreement, Nepal immediately sent a diplomatic note to both countries.
As the strained relations between India and China improve, both countries have once again agreed to trade through the land of Nepal. Lipulek Pass is a territory within Nepal on the official map issued by Nepal. In 2020, relations between India and China were strained due to the clash in Galwan. However, since last year, both countries are trying to improve their relations. Both countries are holding phased talks and high-level political meetings to return to the pre-conflict status.
Lipulek-Kalapani and Limpiyadhura have been claimed by Nepal for a long time. However, India has maintained its control over that area. After the new map released by India in the first week of November 2019 shows the Kalapani and Lipulek areas within the Indian border, the dispute between the two countries is on the rise.
After India claimed Nepal's land as its own and showed it on the map, Nepal sent a diplomatic note and objected. A request for talks was sent. However, after India ignored it, Nepal issued a map up to Limpiyadhura in June 2077.
which is known as 'Chuchche Map' . But, Nepal has not yet officially sent the new map to the international world. As a result, in the new map released by the northern neighbor China in 2023, Lipulek, Kalapani and Limpiyadhura are shown on the Indian side.
