Interference with Press Freedom in Nepal: Questions Raised by US Report

A report released by the US State Department shows that Nepal's human rights are deteriorating. The report cited interference on press freedom, deaths in prison, child marriage and restrictions on refugee rights as key challenges.

The report mainly raised serious questions about the declining press freedom situation in Nepal. The report mentions that press freedom has deteriorated compared to the previous year.  

Although the constitution guarantees freedom of expression, the recent laws are unclear, the report concludes. Journalists were banned from the Democracy Day program held in Tundikhel on February 7.

Similarly, on the 12th of last October, journalists who were covering the demonstration against ride-sharing services were attacked by public transport professionals. It has been mentioned in the report that the journalists of Nepal are unsafe by including these topics.  The

"Many laws including the Penal Code, Contempt, Broadcasting Act and Working Journalist Act can criminalize journalists," the report says, "As a result, the media has to suffer self-censorship." report says, "There were many incidents of threats and attacks on journalists who wrote news about corruption in journalism." Among them, Dahal, a journalist from the Center for Investigative Journalism Nepal, was personally and professionally threatened by Dharan's Mayor Sampang and his supporters in December. This incident happened after Dahal published an investigative story about the mayor's performance.'

Thus, Nepal's press freedom is in a state of decline. In the press freedom index published by Reporters Without Borders (RSF), Nepal has also fallen compared to before. According to RSF, according to the index of 2025, Nepal is 90  1st place  is . While last year, Nepal was at 74th place. Compared to the previous year, this year Nepal has dropped by 16 points.

Similarly, according to the Federation of Nepalese Journalists, 94 incidents of press freedom were registered in Nepal last financial year. It continues in the current financial year as well . Only 57 cases of press freedom violations have been registered since last May. What else is in the

It is mentioned in the report that even though there was a report about this incident, the security agencies did not investigate it. 

The laws of Nepal prohibit both boys and girls under the age of 20 from marrying. But this report mentions that Nepal has a high rate of child marriage and women giving birth at a young age. According to the report, a large number of child marriages are taking place in the Dalit and Madhesi communities. According to the report, 52 child marriage cases have been registered in a year up to mid-July. The conclusion of the report is that such marriages directly affect the education, health and safety of girls from violence.
