Former King Gyanendra has made 86-year-old former Panch Navaraj Subedi the vehicle for his political comeback. During the last days of the Panchayat, Subedi Mahendra, who was the president of the National Panchayat, was also the Minister of Home Affairs and Minister of Industry and Commerce in 2025. When he was the Minister of Commerce, his relationship with the then Prince Gyanendra deteriorated because he could not fulfill his non-commercial interests.
Subedi has already disclosed that Omega, the world-famous watchmaker of Switzerland, wanted to open a factory in Nepal at that time, but after Gyanendra sought a half share, Omega's arrival was stopped. Due to the same reason, the relationship between them, which had deteriorated, has now improved dramatically. But the memoir written by Subedi in his autobiography book 'Ek Kalkhand of History' is alive. On pages 11 and 12 of the book, Subedi has written:
'At the beginning of 2025, I was the Minister of State for Home Affairs. I got spondylitis. I was very sad. He was sent to Delhi for treatment by the government. I got admission in All India Institute of Medical Sciences. My wife Meera and I were two. The embassy was well taken care of, but Prime Minister Surya Bahadurji resigned suddenly. The cabinet was dissolved. I also resigned from the ministry. The formation of the next cabinet is about a week late. The embassy also stopped caring. Five/six days later, Shri Gehendra Bahadur Rajbhandari called. He said, 'It has been ordered to ask Navrajji, do you want to do business or not?' I replied that whatever looks are acceptable to me. The Cabinet was formed the next day under the Prime Ministership of Kirtinidhi Bista. I became the Minister of Industry and Commerce.
It took about three weeks to return from Delhi. On the day after reaching Kathmandu, Shri 5 had an evening visit. It was ordered by the government, 'Nawaraj, I gave you this ministry in the belief that you will work with honesty. You have to work in this ministry for a long time. My family may be under pressure. Do not be afraid. Let me know if it bothers you. You should make a trade and transit agreement with India.' Nevertheless, I worked in this ministry for more than three years. I did not come under anyone's pressure. I was never told by the Prime Minister to do this. Kirti Babu was very easy to work with. Even if you ask something, decide for yourself, Masrah's friend would say what I would say.
Sri 5 Adhirajkumar Himalaya, Vasundhara and Sri 5 Adhiraj Kumari Helen were all three in business and they were under equal pressure. Later, Shri 5 Adhirajkumar Gyanendra was also added. The king would not give anything but they wanted full concessions. I had to work under such extreme conditions. One day in the evening I received a call from Mr. 5. The Prime Minister should also be there. Things went on. It was ordered by the king, 'My brothers and sons have to do business, what will the sons of the people who gave them all to do? I have given you to do one industry at a time. No need to give anymore. Kirtinidhi, Navaraj got more 'pressure' (pressure), you will tell me. I don't know if the Prime Minister said this or not, but after that I didn't feel any pressure. But they wouldn't talk to me even when we met at parties. My relationship with Shri 5 Gyanendra was not good from the beginning. Later, even when Mr. 5 was gone, I was not treated well. There are two main reasons for this - firstly, there was no candidate for the Prime Minister in opposition to Surya Bahadurji in 2038 and secondly, there was an Omega (watch) factory. Omega Watch sent a proposal to open a factory in Nepal. The thing was good. Therefore, when returning from the meeting of the World Bank's Annual General Assembly, he received an instruction from Mr. 5 Mahendra to go to Geneva to see the Omega Factory and talk to him.
While returning from Washington, I, Bhesha Bahadurji and Dr. Pushkarnath Pant The three of us also visited the Omega factory and talked about opening a factory in Nepal. Their only condition was that we do not work in partnership with the government or the private sector. They said that if this condition is approved, they will start the factory within a year. We agreed that if a company like Omega comes along, why not? However, after coming to Kathmandu, Shri 5 Adhirajkumar Gyanendra wanted a half share (part) in it, which I flatly refused. This is why Omega could not come to Nepal. Gyanendra Sarkar also received from me. However, the instructions given by the government between the Prime Minister and me in the palace made it easier for me to work.
