Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli has asked major countries to take responsibility for climate change. Addressing the meeting of the Climate Risk Forum of Leaders in New York on Wednesday at the 79th General Assembly of the United Nations, he said, "For global climate justice, I request the major countries that emit carbon to take responsibility for their contribution to climate change."
Oli emphasized on the unequal impact of climate change on vulnerable countries like Nepal. He said, "Climate change is the defining crisis of our time." Being a Himalayan and an underdeveloped country, Nepal is facing increasing amount and intensity of climatic disasters.'
He emphasized the terrible situation of the glaciers in the Himalayas and made it clear that there is a huge amount of snow in the Himalayan region. He said that snow has become an important livelihood for billions of people in Asia and He also mentioned that as the global temperature increases, the rate of snow is decreasing unprecedentedly.
He also informed the world community that the climate disaster in Nepal in recent months has claimed more than 200 lives and destroyed the entire community and local economy. Referring to a report, Oli said that Nepal is on the 10th position in the list of countries most affected by various climate-related events from 2000 to 2018.
He said that Nepal is committed to the Paris Agreement. He made it clear that the world should take immediate steps to limit the global warming mentioned in the agreement to 1.5 degrees Celsius. He also pointed out the need for a fair and accessible financial mechanism for climate action.
The Prime Minister emphasized that climate finance should be subsidized to protect countries at risk for climate action from raising sustainable debt. He said, "I request that climate finance be separated from traditional development aid."
