Another 7 Nepalis have died among those who illegally joined the Russian army and participated in the war with Ukraine and have no contact with their families. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed on Thursday that the number of Nepalis who have died in the Russia-Ukraine war has reached 17 with 7 more. According to the ministry, the number of people without contact with their families is at least 96.

On the basis of the death certificate provided by the Russian government, the foreign ministry has released the identity of the deceased Nepalese. According to the statement released by the ministry on Thursday, the additional deaths include Purna Bahadur Gurung of Dhading Gangajamuna-3, Naveen Shahi of Jajarkot Shivalaya-5, Padam Bahadur Ghimire of Udaipur Chaudandigarhi-3, Birtamod-5 of Jhapa, Gangaram Adhikari of Goldhap, Jit Bahadur Vick of Baglung, Sanjay of Banke Baijnath-7. Foreign Ministry confirmed on Thursday, but most of the families have already done Kazkiriya based on the information received. The family of Purna Bahadur of Dhading performed Kazakiriya in the first week of January. Brother Dai Shyam Bahadur told Kantipur that he got the news of Purna Bahadur's death on November 18, who was posted in Zaparia, Ukraine, three days later. After one month of basic training, Purna Bahadur was hit by a mine explosion on the first day after entering the Russia-Ukraine battlefield.

Russo-Ukraine war is expensive for Nepal: at least 96 Nepalis without contact

His friend who returned from the battlefield sent a video of Purna Bahadur's mutilated body to Purna Bahadur's brother Shyam Bahadur on November 22. "We got a video of my brother dying in Ukraine after being hit by a mine, it was very painful," Shyam Bahadur said, "I could clearly recognize my brother's face. We didn't think that the body would come, so we cremated it with the photo. Purna Bahadur paid 8 lakh rupees to join the Russian army the day after Ashtami.

Earlier, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed the death of 10 Nepalis. Among them Hariprasad Aryal of Syangja, Bharat Bahadur Shah of Kailali, Rajkumar Giri of Dhading, Pritam Karki of Syangja, Putlibazar-5, Gangaraj Moktan of Ilam-5, Rajkumar Karki of Melung-6 of Dolakha, Rupak Karki of Wanganga-1 of Kapilvastu, Dewan Rai of Kaski, Gorkha Sandeep Thapalia and Kundan Singh Nagal of Darchula.

Among the 17 confirmed dead, only 26-year-old Dewan Rai from Pokhara was buried in Moscow with honors by the Russian army at the Rohbar of the Nepali Embassy, five months after his death. According to the victim's family, the compensation process has not yet started.

The number of Nepalis who have joined the Russian army are disappearing and dying due to the failure to repatriate and rescue them in time. Although the government continues regular dialogue with the Russian side, the Nepalese have not been able to cancel the contract with the Russian army.

Kriti Bhandari, the coordinator of the awareness campaign for the safety of the lives of those recruited in the Russian army, said that the situation is becoming that Nepalese citizens who have no connection to the war are forced to die. When deep information about the Russia-Ukraine war was received. After that, the families of army recruits are rushing to Singha Darbar for survival. They are appealing for rescue,' she said, 'The survivors are not able to return to their country even if they want to, they are forced to live in the war.'

She said that there is a delay in giving proper compensation to the families of citizens who have lost their lives. "Environment should be created for the safe return of Nepali citizens who are in the Russian army," she said. Bhandari said that 531 victim families have joined the campaign.

Minister of Foreign Affairs Narayankaji Shrestha claimed that the government is continuing diplomatic efforts with high priority to bring back the Nepalese who joined the Russian army. The government has sent a diplomatic note to Russia for the third time. Nepal has again written a letter to Russia, which did not respond to the diplomatic note, mentioning the situation of Nepalis recruited in the Russian army, compensation and reference to bring them back.

Minister Shrestha called the Russian Ambassador to Nepal Alexey Novikov to the ministry on Tuesday evening and said that a high-level visit from Nepal or Russia is necessary in the current situation. "Discussion and dialogue between the two countries at a high level is necessary to understand the situation of Nepalis and rescue them. Therefore, I have told the Ambassador that there should be a high-level visit from you or a high-level visit from Nepal to Russia," he said.

Minister Shrestha had a phone conversation with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov on February 24. A phone conversation between Russian Foreign Minister Lavrov and Deputy Prime Minister Shrestha was made possible after Nepal made continuous efforts to understand the situation of Nepalis recruited into the Russian army. During the talks, Shrestha requested to provide the number of Nepalis recruited in the Russian army, to bring the dead bodies of those who died during the fighting to Nepal, to give compensation and not to recruit Nepalis in the Russian army and to send back those recruited. But the Russian Foreign Minister did not want to discuss other issues even though Russia is ready to compensate the families of those killed during the war.
