Locals waking up Ghatu

75-year-old Kham Bahadur Rana Ghatu gets excited when he says dance. He was busy dancing Ghatu in Gorkha Municipality-10 Virenchok, waking up the youth on Monday, the day of Baisakh Purnima.

People from the old generation to the youth gathered at Virinchok to watch the Ghatu dance. The older generation above the age of 60 were engrossed in singing songs for Ghatu Naach. Three girls were decorated and prepared for the ghatu dance. 

"I started singing ghatu songs from the age of 14, now I am 75, now I am teaching the youth here how to dance ghatu," he said. Ishta Devi, Nithchuli, Barchuli, Deuchuli, Gangachuli etc. are called while dancing Ghatu. Kham Bahadur says that the Ghatu dance started when there were twenty-four twenty-two kingdoms at that time. "We sing songs based on the biography of the queen that happened at that time," he said, "the songs contain stories of various social themes." Kham Bahadur Ghatu is a singing guru. The tradition of ghatu dance in Virenchok has been going on for years, the local Girija said. He said that the tradition of years ago has been continued this year as well.  He said, "The Ghatu Panchami, which has started today, will be performed on the day of the Panchami," he said. There is no use of musical instruments in Ghatu dance. 

Locals waking up Ghatu The Ghatu dance associated with historical events varies from place to place in the district. Locals say that Ghatu dance starts from Mangal Charan. Locals here said that there is a need to transfer the culture and customs to future generations as it is an ancient cultural dance.
