Jhuma Limbu has won the award for Best Playback Singer (Female) at the 8th Xtreme Energy Radio Kantipur National Music Awards 2082.
She received the award for the song ‘Kafle’ from the film ‘Woolen Sweater’ during Radio Kantipur’s 28th anniversary celebration held at Plaza, Pulchowk, on Friday.
Alongside Limbu, Rachana Rimal for ‘Dhagole Bateko’, Salina Bik for ‘Kun Hawale’, Sunita Thegim for ‘Yuma Hajuri’, and Samikshya Adhikari for ‘Natra Bhane Jindagi’ were also nominated in the Best Female Playback Singer category.
Limbu is known for her research, exploration, and promotion of indigenous music. Although she began her career with Nepali light and modern songs, in recent years she has been dedicated to the excavation and preservation of indigenous music.
Albums such as ‘Sounds of Mundhum’, which she created based on the Kirat culture and Mundhumi philosophy of eastern Nepal, have brought indigenous singing styles like Hakpare, Palam, and Khyalij to life. Not limited to singing, through the ‘Indigenous Music Campaign’ she has been documenting and promoting endangered folk instruments, singing traditions, and indigenous cultural tunes of various ethnicities, regions, and communities across Nepal.
