Deuki custom in the play 'Chhorika Mundama Foli'

What you should know

The Deuki custom, which was once prevalent in the Far West, has been portrayed in a play. The play 'Chhorika Mundama Folie', written and directed by playwright Pushparaj Awasthi, is being staged at Ojas Theater (Shali Theater).

The play is based on the Deuki custom that was prevalent in the Far West at one time. In the Deuki custom, vows were made in temples to fulfill wishes and desires, and after the vows were fulfilled, a deuki was offered to the girl as a form of vow.

Director Awasthi says that the play was produced to make students read about the Deuki custom on social issues and to enhance the stage knowledge of the actors participating in the play. He claims that the play was also produced with the aim of providing knowledge about the customs and culture of the Far West to students and audiences in Kathmandu and promoting the language, costumes, and lifestyle of the Far West.

Director Awasthi says that since he was born in the Far West, he feels a lot of love for that place and wants to promote its art, culture, and traditions. He says, 'That's why you can find the taste of the Far West in most of the plays I produce. Still, this play has a completely local flavor.' It is a challenge to get students born and raised in Kathmandu to work in the language of the Far West, but I have tried to face the challenge and get the students here to work in the love of the Far West.''
