Ganga Pun of Rurukshetra Rural Municipality-4, Thanidanda, used to plant sugarcane ever since she knew it. The sugarcane used in this way was ground and made into sugar by using home remedies. It was a lot of hard work. There was also a lot of income depending on the hard work.
Market promotion was not possible as expected. But Thorga was known as a sugarcane village. Even though they planted sugarcane from tradition, the farmers could not get the price according to their hard work.
When Thorgeli Good Khundo Udyog was established in 2079 with the help of Ruru Multipurpose Cooperative Society Limited, a plan was made to commercialize traditional farming. Preparations for the production of jaggery and khundu were started by introducing modern technology. It goes without saying that its proper production was started from the industry last January.
She repeats that she was not professional even though she used sugarcane at first. "I have planted sugarcane on 10 plants of land," she said, "so far I have sold 176 quintals of sugarcane to the cooperative."
"We have been increasing the cultivation, this time we have reduced the expenses and earned 50 thousand rupees," she said. Kamala Marasini of Thorga has also planted sugarcane on 5 ropani land. She says that she got good income from sugarcane. "On top of that, it has become faster and easier now that sugarcane is harvested from the machine," she said. She said that the sugarcane farmers of the village have been organized by the
cooperative. Ghanshyam Darlami Magar of Thorga also said that after becoming a member of the cooperative, he is cultivating sugarcane on twice as much land as before.
As sugarcane is a cash crop, farmers are able to earn good income in one season, he says. Thorgeli Gud Khundu Udyog, which is run through a cooperative, currently employs 8 employees to prepare khund, gud and candies. Prakash Thapa, the manager of the
co-op, works on his own. 7 employees are hired to make good, khundo and candy with monthly salary.
"After the co-operative organized the industry, the farmers are getting attracted to sugarcane farming," he said, "The co-operative's plan is to increase the identity of Thorga's good and khundo by making the farmers of this area professional." The Department of Industry has already given the brand name to Thorgely Good Khundo Industry on December 14. Now the same brand is being produced and packaged.
Thorga and Thanpati of Rurukshetra Rural Municipality-3, Darsingbas and Chautara of 4 and Bhatkuwa and Churek of 1 are considered fertile for sugarcane production. The time for sugarcane crushing is from March to March. From Baisakh to June, khundo, gud, candies are prepared from crushed sugarcane. The good gulmi produced here is delivered to foreign countries in the form of koseli, which comes to Nepal including Redi Bazar, Butwal, Kathmandu, Pokhara.
Bhesraj Gyawali, the chairman of the cooperative, said that they used to go to the farmer's house and fetch sugarcane themselves. Earlier, farmers used to sell sugarcane for 6 rupees per kg. At present, the cooperative is buying from farmers at Rs. 12 per kg. "We take a tractor to the farmer's house and take sugarcane from the field, they will do the loading," he said.
Ward president of Rurukshetra Rural Municipality-3 Sheshnarayan Paudel said that even if there is no problem with marketing, the demand can be met. The rural municipality has managed the Janapriya Pravi building for the operation of the industry. According to Yadu Gyawali, the chairman of the municipality, the municipality has given 55 lakh rupees twice to the cooperative for the construction of physical infrastructure. He said that subsidies can be given for fertilizers and seeds to increase cultivation and help in marketing.
Manager Thapa says that Heifer International Nepal has repeatedly supported 75 lakh rupees. He said that Hefer is helping in the marketing as well as the purchase of the machine. Krishi Gyan Kendra Gulmi has also supported 3 lakhs for sugarcane promotion, seeds and marketing. According to Krishi Gyan Kendra Gulmi, more than 57 million worth of good, raw and processed materials were sold in the district last year.
