After the increase in electricity tripping, the number of people demanding to publish the load shedding schedule on social media is increasing. Last Thursday, when industrialists were complaining about unannounced load shedding in the industrial sector, power was cut off for hours in some parts of Kathmandu and in the central and eastern regions of the country. Soon after, from the industrial sector to households to social networks, they started asking for a schedule of load shedding.
Hitendradev Shakya, Executive Director of Nepal Electricity Authority, held a press conference at the Load Dispatch Center in Suchatar on Friday and clarified that load shedding will not happen again and that the power outage is due to technical reasons. But industrialists of Biratnagar have said that the production cycle of industrialists has become unstable due to continuous power cuts for the last two months. They say that due to unannounced load shedding, dozens of industries in the Morang-Sunsari industrial corridor have been forced to cut production.
More than 350 small industries in the corridor have become problematic due to daily power cuts, said Krishna Regmi, head of the office of Morang Udyog Business Association. There is a problem of random power cuts, power tripping is also the same. which has started causing problems in machines and raw materials,' he said, 'the authority has not even given a schedule for load shedding.' "Our production costs are relatively high compared to other countries," Rathi said, "In the case of industries, the first requirement is to provide easy electricity supply." Rathi said that due to irregular and unannounced load shedding, production costs have increased by 30 percent. According to Rathi, the use of imported diesel powered generators is costing thousands of rupees more per hour. Textile, fruit processing and plastic industries have started giving 'optional leave' to workers. More than 1 thousand 800 permanent and contract workers are currently affected, according to the data of the Morang Industry and Trade Association.
Due to irregular and unannounced load shedding, the production cost of the industry increased by 30 percent : Anupam Rathi, President of Morang Udyog Trade Association
Industrialist Navin Rizal says that while talking about re-industrialization, when the problem of power cuts increases, there is confusion whether to run machines or to put shutters on the industry. He says that 1.2 tons of raw materials are being wasted every day.
Rakesh Surana, president of industry organization Morang, complained that due to the irregularity of power supply, it is difficult to run the industry. He claims that until the electricity supply is improved, there will be a big impact on the industry. "The problem of electricity irregularity needs to be rectified soon," he said, "If there is no improvement, there is no alternative to street agitation."
Like the industrialists of Morang, the industries of Birganj-Pathalaiya industrial corridor are also in crisis due to unannounced load shedding and poor quality electricity. The industrialists complain that the production capacity of the industries in the corridor has dropped to 20 to 25 percent due to excessive tripping and no fixed schedule of power cuts. Madhav Rajpal, Senior Vice President of Birgunj Industry and Commerce Association, said that there is no fixed schedule and criteria for power cuts in the
corridor. "Sometimes there is power cut for 6 to 8 hours, sometimes for 10 to 12 hours," he said, "The authority should openly say that load shedding is done, can it be hidden now?" "If there is a high demand for electricity in the corridor, the authority should divide the corridor into different sections and formally announce a power cut in those sections," he said. Hari Gautam, president of the association, says that there is no fixed time and schedule for power cuts in the
corridor. He said that there is a problem that there is a demand for more than the capacity of electricity and there is no supply according to it, even the lights go out every minute. According to him, the industry in the
corridor could barely produce 20 to 25 percent of its full capacity. He also said that in order to provide quality electricity to the industries of the corridor, a load shedding schedule should be made in the corridor.
Awadhesh Dubey, chief engineer of Birganj distribution center of the electricity authority, said that he could not play any role in this as the power cut is happening from the center. "We will only look at the distribution of electricity," he said, "power will be cut from the center itself." Dubey said that if 150 megawatts from India and 40 to 50 megawatts are available for the corridor, the demand is 300 megawatts.
