Reading the Sambhot script in Jumla

What you should know

The teaching of Sambhot script has begun for the first time in Jumla. The Buddha Darshan Sangh has initiated the teaching of Sambhot script to study the teachings of the Buddha and convey his teachings to the world.

The association, which was established two years ago, had started teaching Sambhot script by opening a school for a year and a half. The association has stated that the interest of students in studying Sambhot script has increased. Earlier, it was said that only the Bhote caste could read this script, but now all the Kshetris, Bahuns, and Dalits are studying this script.

Currently, 16 students are studying this script. There are two teachers. While the school is studying during the day, the classes are being held here in the morning and evening. There is also accommodation for the students studying here.

It was compulsory to go to Kathmandu and India to study this script, but now this script is being studied in Jumla itself  Khenpo Kunkhyab (Tshiring Tamang) informed. He said that the Sambhot script is being studied with the aim of understanding Buddha and introducing his knowledge to the world. 'There is mental tension here,' he said, 'and the study is being done to relieve that tension and gain the knowledge of Buddha.'

Currently, secondary level studies are being conducted. But the goal is to establish a college in Jumla for the study of this script. Before the eighth century, this script was studied in Nepal.

Currently, 2 people from Mugu district, 6 from Guthichaur, 6 from Patarasi, 1 from Tatopani and 1 from Dolpa district are studying Sambhota script.

Sambhota script is a script mainly used to write in the Bhot language. It was developed by Thonmi Sambhota, a minister of the Tibetan Dharmaraja Srongchan Gampo in the seventh century. Sambhota went to India on the king's orders and learned the knowledge of vocabulary from learned scribes, and then returned to Tibet, Khenpo Kunkhyab informed. According to him, the Sambhot script has four vowel symbols and thirty consonants. Karma Budha of the Buddha Darshan Sangh Jumla said that it is necessary to study the Sambhot script. He said, "The number of students is increasing now. It is seen that the number of students who understand the importance of this script and acquire the knowledge of Buddha is increasing."
