At least 92 schools were damaged in Kavrepalanchok due to heavy rains and landslides last week. According to the Education Development and Coordination Unit, 11 out of 13 local level schools in the district have been damaged.
Due to incessant rains, the school has been completely closed since the flood and the school has informed through a public notice that teaching will not be conducted in the damaged school until further notice.
unit chief Devaki Dhakal said that 13 in Panauti Municipality of the district, 12 in Roshi Rural Municipality, 5 in Bethanchok Rural Municipality, 10 in Bhumlu Rural Municipality, 7 in Temal Rural Municipality, 5 in Dhulikhel Municipality, 13 in Panchkhaal Municipality, 14 in Chaunrideurali Rural Municipality, 3 in Banepa Municipality, 4 in Khanikhola Rural Municipality and Mandandeupur. She informed that six schools were damaged in the municipality.
According to him, Roshi, Panauti and Bethanchok are the local areas that have suffered a lot of damage to schools due to the flood. Most of the schools in Roshi, Panauti and Bethanchowk have been completely damaged. It is not possible to operate those schools immediately,' she said. According to the
unit, three students died in Panauti, two in Roshi, two in Temal and one in Dhulikhel due to landslides. Dhakal, the head of the unit, said that Nirkyol will be reached only after coordinating with the concerned agencies about how the damaged schools of the district can be operated.
Roshi-9 Mangal Janvijay Secondary School in Mangaltar was completely damaged, Principal Basu Thapa said. He said, 'The structure of the school has been damaged, after the flood caused the damage, the school has been closed by issuing a notice, until the school is restored to its original structure, there is no possibility of resuming teaching.' According to him, it will take two million rupees to rebuild the school.
Dhakal informed that the details of the damage reached the schools of Namobuddha Nagar and Mahabharat rural municipality, two local levels of the district, which were damaged by the flood. She said that since the road was blocked and the electricity was not operational, it was not possible to collect the exact details about the extent of the damage to the schools of that level.
The government declared crisis areas for three months on Friday, including Roshi, Temal, Bethanchok, Chaunrideurali and Mahabharat Rural Municipality of Kavrepalanchok and Panauti, Namobuddha, Mandandeupur municipalities. Out of 13 local levels of the district, apart from Panchkhal Nagar, Mahabharat and Khanikhola Rural Municipality, 72 people have lost their lives due to landslides in 10 levels. Five people are still missing, while 75 people are injured, according to the District Police Office.
Among the dead are a foreign citizen in Panauti and a woman from Ramechhap in Roshi Rural Municipality. Apart from that, 31 women, 25 men, eight boys and six girls have died in the incident so far. The local level in the district has also announced the relief amount for the families who lost their lives in the flood.
Floods have left hundreds of families homeless. Transport services are still blocked on the damaged roads and the affected areas are without electricity and communication.
