This was in 1996, when Dharmendra Pradhan was the national secretary of the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad. At that time, in protest against the leak of the class 12 board exam question paper in Odisha, more than 2,000 students took to the streets under the leadership of the then 27-year-old Pradhan.
The protest against the government of then Chief Minister JB Patnaik turned violent. During a clash with the Rapid Action Force deployed by the government, Pradhan himself was seriously injured. He spent a long time in the hospital.
That street struggle ultimately compelled the Odisha government to make extensive reforms in the examination board. Pradhan, who emerged from student politics, comes from an RSS background.
His father, Debendra Pradhan, was also a minister in the Atal Bihari Vajpayee government. In his four-decade-long political journey, Pradhan has served as an MLA, national president of the youth wing, Lok Sabha MP, and has held important responsibilities from the Ministry of Petroleum to the Ministry of Education.
