On hunger strike: Environmental and social activist Sonam Wangchuk has claimed that the central government has assured him it will consider the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan.
Wangchuk has maintained his stance that his indefinite hunger strike will not end until there is a clear and written commitment that no legal or punitive action of any kind will be taken against the protesting students and demonstrators.
In a statement he issued, Wangchuk mentioned that during his meeting with ministers JP Nadda and Jitendra Singh, who visited the hospital to check on his health, he demanded accountability regarding the NEET question paper leak.
He also said that he received assurances from the government that it would take seriously the matter of providing appropriate relief and compensation to the families of students who committed suicide after the exam paper leak.
“A clear guarantee must be given that no punitive or retaliatory legal action will be taken against any of the young protesters participating in this movement. I strongly urge the government,” Wangchuk stated in his release, “Their only crime is raising their voices for a fair and accountable education system.”
Wangchuk has been on hunger strike for the past 25 days in support of the CJP movement. After an order from the Delhi High Court, police transferred him to Medanta Hospital.
Leaders and activists of CJP have urged him to end his hunger strike. CJP founder Abhijit Dipke urged Wangchuk to end his fast, stating that the movement would continue until their demands are met.
