The Lebanese army is set to take full responsibility for security in three villages in southern Lebanon. The US State Department said on Monday that the first phase of the US-brokered framework agreement
will be implemented in the villages of Fraun, Shreifa and Jawtar al-Gharbia. According to the new plan, the Israeli army is preparing to withdraw from areas it has occupied in southern Lebanon in a phased manner.
After the Israeli forces withdraw, the Lebanese army will take over security in the area. It will also oversee the disarmament of the armed group Hezbollah.

Israel also confirmed the start of this pilot program and said that its army is coordinating with the US and Lebanon.
The framework of the agreement was finalized on June 26 after six rounds of direct talks between Lebanon, Israel and the US.
But despite the agreement, tensions in the border area have not yet fully eased.
Israel has continued its military attacks on Lebanon, while Hezbollah has also been firing rockets into northern Israel.
Hezbollah, which is backed by Iran, has rejected the latest agreement between Lebanon and Israel. It has been insisting that Israel leave Lebanon without any conditions. According to the agreement, the Lebanese Armed Forces will take over the security of the areas vacated by Israel and will verify that those areas are free of Hezbollah weapons and military infrastructure.
