The Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo has reached its peak. The World Health Organization (WHO) has confirmed 2,100 cases. Speaking at a press conference in Geneva, WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said that active armed conflict, insecurity and community resistance were hampering treatment efforts in affected areas. He said that despite significant efforts in surveillance, treatment and research, the high incidence of the disease was hampering control efforts. According to the latest report issued by DRC health authorities, 828 people have died from the infection in the country. The number of infected people has reached 2,124. According to officials, the Bundibugyo Ebola virus outbreak has so far spread to five provinces: Ituri, North Kivu, South Kivu, Hat-Ule and Sopa. About 90 percent of the confirmed cases are in Ituri province. Officials fear the infection could spread rapidly to neighboring Uganda.
The Congolese government officially declared an Ebola epidemic on May 15.
